944 Insurance Madness...4000+GBP

Am having one hell of a time trying to find an insurance company that does not want me to pay through my nose.

Me : 27, Have driven since I was 18, not a single accident BUT a NEW Biritsh Driver's Licence. I have done all my driving abroad, and apparently that counts for nothing in the UK.

Car : 944 Turbo/Turbo Cab

I have had the most success with Chris Wilkins (whose name I got from a previous string) but was wondering if the treasure trove of knowledge that is PH'ers could suggest a few morenames of people that might help?

Std companies are chargin me over 4000 GBP, which is absolutely nuts.

I will be insured on my girlfriends car, as well as on my bike and my car will be a weekend toy, so I cannot fathom these ridiculous prices!

I do hope someone can help me, I really don't want to pay those ridiculous prices.

Classic insurance I've got my 944 S2 with Classic Line Insurance at the moment. I'm 28 - cost me £360 with a 5k mile limited, classic policy

I'm with Firebond insurance (https://www.firebond.co.uk/default.aspx) on a classic policy - £600 pa, 27, 0 no-claims, just got back from a year abroad, parked on the drive (in a nice area - Warwickshire).

Give them a try - they were 1/2 the price of most others for me...

Transfer your car into her name & become a named driver on her insurance on your car.
You wont build any no claims but you will begin to build a history of uk driving.

They may be main stream but if you've not tried them I've found direct line www.directline.co.uk/ very good, couldn't get a better price. Bizarrely enough I found it cheaper when i added my girlfriend as a second driver.

I'm 34 and have all my NCB on the wifes car.
I've just insured a 993 (P) £28K value with a limit of 5K miles per year. Fully comp £659.00 with Classic Car Insurance on 01285 841555.

Im 25 been driving just 2years, have a 944 S and insured it through Graham Sykes for just £350 p/a 5k miles limit non-commuting car and insured as a toy/second car.

£4000+ is an absolute rip off whoever quotes that is having a joke.
Try Graham Sykes online they give instant quotes and you can buy online with a valid credit card.

Peart are broker so my policy is with Royal and Sun alliance via Peart. But if you ring them, you get to talk to actual people immediatly no menu crap.

Hmm no one here is addressing the real issue which is the fact you have no UK licence record. I was in the same position as you.

Have you tried contacting your previous Insurers overseas? This can work to give you an initial NCD. I brought a copy of mine with me and was given 4 years NCD immediately.

As for the licence, not much you can do now you've swapped except grin and bear it. It'll take three years before it doesn't affect you any longer. My advice is to speak to an insurer who is not run of the mill and might actually listen to you. ie not the big companies.

I'd suggest trying Footman James for Classic Insurance. I had no problem with them even with the foreign licence.

My 944 was on a fully comp limited mileage classic policy for 400/yr (in Central London); the 993 is on the same for 600-ish.

Again they are a broker, but you talk to real people.

Agree with Lagerhead's comment. I got 5 years NCD from my previous non-UK insurers so it is possible.

I was in exactly the same position as you 9 months ago with a 944 Turbo coupe. NZ driving experience. Rang everyone. Finally ended up paying £1470 through Tesco's. Car parked on the road. Fitted immoboliser as requirement. Going to get a cheap car for G/F and have this as a second one next Jan. Will try to get car off the road too, that will bring cost down. Good luck.

My American wife was able to transfer her blemish free California details across to the UK, it did however require special underwriting needing her US insurance company to send her details to the UK insurance company. Once this was done she was given maximum no-claims.

Have had to accept that the best I will be able to do is just over 2.5k.

I am fairly disguested I must admit.

The insurance is 30% of the cost of the car! Insuring myself on another vehicle makes no difference either.

But hey, I want my 944 and insurance isn't going to put me off.

I moved from Australia and was in a similar position - approx 13 years driving experience but only a year in the UK. Caused big problems for me too. Ended up going with a classic policy through the Insurance Factory. Was underwritten by Royal Sun Alliance. Cost £400 for 3,000 miles on a 944S2. Didn't have to have a second car either. They were one of the few that could get the insurers over the lack of UK driving issue.

Worth pointing out that I had an MX5 for about 9 months before that from when I had first arrived which found only Tesco would accept my Australian no claims bonus. Worth ringing them maybe, although I know they wouldn't cover me on the 944.

Thank Keggers, I think the MX-5 probably did help. Really annoying situation but sometimes you just have to bite the buller. Guess I should be grateful I can actually still buy the car...
