Are these things good at protecting a car from the elements?

https://www.houseoftents.co.uk/portable-garage/583...

Want something I can just drive my car in and out of on a regular basis, but with the car protected from the weather.

Effectively run up of space in my garage !

Not sure if things make things worse with humidity / damp in the tent ?

As you say, it’s not terribly straightforward.

Without any kind of insulation the chances of getting condensation on the tent are very high, because as the temperature drops the amount of water the air can hold reduces.

In my experience outdoor uninsulated storage works best in a “car port” or barn scenario where the car is covered from the rain but exposed to ambient airflow. It’s not as good as a proper insulated garage/climate, of course.

might be possible to use fans or something to get some airflow through the tent?

Just don't close the end flap fully - problem solved?

I wondered that but maybe then it’ll blow away more easily? Not sure how they are secured down etc?

Get one with the velcro-secured groundsheet- stops moisture rising from the ground in the better months. Look at dancover.

Secure it with ground anchors- the j-shaped galvanised ground hooks into a concreted hole and you’ll be ok.
Add a carcoon veloce on the inside and you’ve got very acceptable storage.

I would avoid like the plague.

My MKIV Supra was ruined by having a car cover many years ago. Moisture was the main issue and I doubt this would be enough of an improvement not to still have issues. Also keeping secure in severe winds were also a pain.

Nothing better than a garage or in the absence of that, a decent wax and underseal. Most intermediate measures seem to have potential drawbacks and actually damage the car.

DON’T do that ^
Unless it is somewhere incredibly sheltered. Otherwise the wind will blow straight into it and in all likelihood lift it clean off its securings.

I have one, in Wales, in the current weather, and it is still standing and in one piece. I’m not sure whether all versions are the same, but I have one which neither the front (for obvious reasons) or the back covers are fixed to the floor, so nothing to stop it flapping in the wind!? I tried to bury the back cover at the bottom to stop it flapping but it didn’t help, so I used a couple of pallets stood up and driven in a couple of fending posts to secure, which has stopped the back cover flapping so much. For the front I have slid a metal bar in along the bottom hem of the sheet to help secure it.
The side/roof piece I have buried along each edge. The main method of securing is a metal screw type anchor for each corner which came with the shelter, plus some large rocks. Rocks were not included with the shelter laugh

As it has been so mild recently, condensation has not been an issue as yet. In any case, it can’t be any worse than the car being outside

Thanks, so it’s a pass on that type of storage. What about a car cocoon, which has a bubble within a bubble ? Any experiences of them?

A mate uses a carcoon within a garage for extra protection but it’s a bit of a pain to get the car in and out on a regular basis. I’d probably look for an enclosed tent / shelter which lets air flow freely but not a carport which will probably let a fair bit of the weather through the sides.

I don’t think there’s an obvious solution aside from storing other stuff on insulated sheds (assuming your garage isn’t full of cars that is!).

The key thing is regular use. If the car is in and out regularly, if the door is left open in calm conditions, if the vent is left open etc - it’s a great solution.

Whereas shutting a car away for weeks or months on end would be problematic. Worse than leaving it outdoors? Maybe, if the inside of the tent was always very humid.

Engine heat from a just-parked car also gets some hot dry air into the garage every time you park it.
