Poor starting 944

Does this sound familiar to anyone?
My 82 944 has just begun to get difficult to start. It turns over for ages before trying to fire. Once running it is fine.
I have replaced the DME relay and fuel pump and it has made no difference. I know there is an anti flow back valve in the pump but having checked the old one which is fine it seems unlikly that is the culprit. I'm not sure I can hear the pump running when it is cranking but I can't remember if that was always the case.
Any ideas.
