I contacted my Insurance Company (Direct Line)this AM just to check that I was covered to participate in the Parade at Silverstone this Saturday. Short answer is 'no'. Any advise from you more experienced chappies is gratefully sought. Who can I get cover from for the day?

Wouldn't have thought its necessary as there will not be any speed involved.

I am assuming that a parade means slowly driving round with flags out of the window rather that a trackday type thing.

I would think the only reason there will be to have a bump is if there are loads of sexy ladies there in thongs, and you bump into the car in front while your eyes are out on stalks!

Bernie,

If we hit speeds in excess of 30mph, I'd be suprised!

Am I right in thinking that you sign a liability waiver to take part?

Didn't know we'd be going that fast - may have to reconsider.

I'm not convinced about that speed really. I watched the parade laps at the Porsche festival (where they didn't make you sign a disclaimer - it was connected to not having to wear helmets which silverstone are also doing) and they went pretty quick!

From previous experience and on this fast and long circuit, I'd expect at least 70mph and absolutely no overtaking - so pretty safe I guess!

Tesco say I'm not insured for it either, and they say thay can't offer the option of paying for extra cover, which is a bit of a pain. If that is insurers' general view, it could be awkward if anything happens (no doubt it would be someone else's fault, but then they'd probably not be insured either!). Good idea not to run any marshals over 'cos the cost would have to be met by the driver!

I need to check my policy wording. I think mines covered if its run under MSA regs (which I think a lack of helmets is tied into).

I've not come up with a running order, because it will be too darned time consuming to organise, so if I can ask everyone who participates to be patient and accept your position in the line-up with good grace. The marshalls will dictate this anyway, not me.

Bear in mind that we will have between 70 and 90 cars, split by three or four Silverstone pace cars, doing probably just one lap of the grand prix circuit. The pace cars will be doing about 30mph (so spectators can savour the sight, apart from anything else!)so I can assure everyone that it will be as safe as we can possibly make it.

For those that are worried, I think this would come under the definition of an "organised carnival procession".

According to the IOB (now the FSA), organised carnival processions ARE covered by normal road insurance.....

To be honest though, if you damage your car on this procession you deserve to loose your license, car and be locked away as you will be a danger on the road.

It's a chance for the paying public to see the cars, not for people to find out the finer points of the circuit!

To pick up a hint from another thread, it will be as safe as the nuts behind the wheels make it.

Have a great time.
