Dear all,

Seasons greetings...

Quick question.....

I've managed to get a large 20cm crack on my Yaris windscreen and so am looking at a replacement. Have discovered the insurance doesn't have windscreen cover so am looking to source this separately.

Prices vary massively....

My car has rain sensing wipers and lane departure warnings...

1. Does the ADAS system need to be recalibrated after changing the windscreen? Some repairers say that it's not needed as the camera is not unplugged and others say that they can do it on my driveway via the OBD port. Others say that I will need to take it to a fitting centre.

Many thanks
David

Most systems need recalibrating when it comes to adas.

When I had one done on the Volvo, it was calibrated at the fitting centre- but it was a mobile guy that came and done it, so it’s definitely doable that way with some marques.

I’ve had a few windscreens replaced this last year or so such is the state of the roads, all have required the ADAS being reset/calibrated.

LDW will definitely need recalibration. Manufacturers use 2 different types of recalibration, Dynamic where the vehicle needs to be driven to pick up road signs and lane markings etc, and Static, which is done used a board with specific markings on per manufacturer.

Toyota is a Static system so would need to be done in a fitting centre, some installers say they can do this mobile and bring the kit to you however this is not ideal as you can't control the lighting or ensure a level surface etc to guarantee a successful recalibration.

Thank you,
Trying to find an ADAS place in Leeds at present. All windscreen fitters seem to be mobile and have mobile calibration. I’m on a hill..

Recalibration rolleyes

So much misinformation, and most of it coming from the national companies because they want to fit more non genuine windscreens. Did they recall all the windscreens they fitted in 2010 that had ADAS? We all know the answer.

The overwhelming majority of these devices are self calibrating. They have to be in order to negate payload changes, terrain, etc. Besides, if you are fitting a genuine product within VM tolerances, in short, the car doesn't know the windscreen has been changed; there's nothing in the next ignition cycle to detect unless the device is new, unplugged; or that the glass itself is so poor in quality (something you just do not get with OE glass).

Some of the aftermarket glass you get these days (especially from one particular wholesaler which Auto Windscreens favours btw) is so bad it - in my opinion - devalues the car (plus you just cannot get the ADAS devices to work properly, they're that bad!).

So many cars turn up at main dealers with ADAS problems (after having a poor quality windscreen fitted) and after several attempts to recalibrate, just will not reset. Yet, rip that piece of st glass out and replace with one the VM supplies, and as if by magic, everything works as it should; NO recal needed! Errors wiped like they never were there in the first place.

Funny that.

Must be luck, eh?
