Have scrapped a car and got a Certificate-of-Destruction from the ATF but they took the whole V5c. Now I am trying to notify the DVLA that this car was scrapped to get the road tax refunded but find their online system will not allow this without having the V5c number, which I obviously no-longer have!

You can't because otherwise people could maliciously report other people's cars

You'll have to go back to the scrapper to get the number - or apply for a new V5

I wonder if the scrapyard automatically notified DVLA when they produced the Certificate-of-Destruction? Don't think they are likely to still have the V5c, that would have been shredded or thrown-away by now.

If they've taken the entire V5, i'd be checking that they are actually going to "destroy" the car. Keeping the entire V5 easily allows them to try and fix or (if it was a right stter) bodge and dodgy MOT the car back together and move it on.

There's been the odd thread on here before over the years where someone has handed over a car to be "scrapped" but never declared it themselves or bothered to check it had actually been done and then discovered it was back on the road a few months later when they started receiving things like speeding tickets, parking fines, emission zone fines, etc, as a result of the current person using it - because they were still logged as the last owner with the DVLA and the vehicle was never actually scrapped.

Well if they want to keep it on the road and sell it on, that is fine by me, only scrapped it to get TFL's £2k payment. They have already issued a Certificate-of-Destruction.

She was in fantastic condition for 83k miles, nearly new set of matching tyres, timing belt only 5k miles old, been run on fully synthetic oils for last ten years. Such a waste of a good car so if they can 'recycle' the whole car that would be good.

Too late now, but the written advice is that you aren’t supposed to handover the whole V5.
They should also have known that, but it is the keepers responsibility.

You can either:
1. Request a replacement V5 and update online.
2. Send them a letter with a COPY of the certificate of destruction.

Just don’t assume the recycler has updated DVLA on your behalf.

If the car is back on the road, TFL will be chasing you for their £2000 back!

Have already sent them a letter and copy of the Certificate-of-Destruction and kept proof-of-postage.

Turns out I did actually have a copy of the V5c because I had needed to send a copy to TFL for their scrappage scheme; not that this helped though as the DVLA online system refused to accept the document number from the V5c saying that it is either invalid or has been cancelled, maybe that is because the ATF had already informed them of the scrappage when they created to certificate of derstruction.

I'm confused now! There would only be 1 single valid copy of the V5 surely?

Sounds like a new V5 could have been issued then…

I’m not 100% but I think the reference would change if a V5 is re-issued?

Run the number plate online and see what comes up on the free car checks or MoT checker type sites.

If it says it's invalid and you have a certificate of destruction, the most likely thing is that the company has notified the DVLA

You should get a letter saying it's not in your name after a few days so I'd probably just wait and see if that comes

Unfortunately due to previous DVLA incompetence we actually had two V5c documents, both with different numbers but I hope I have only been using the latest one for everything.

MOT checker shows car as valid MOTY but Road Tax checker indicates "Vehicle details could not be found", so I guess that shows that the DVLA have actually been notified of it's destruction.

Yes, that does sound right. Tax on a scrapped vehicle usually says invalid or similar

And Tax refund has just arrived in the post so all fine, didn't need to have sent them that letter.
