No 4K option on YouTube LG TV App or Sky Q
Discussion
Its been a while since I watched YouTube via my TV but its definetly played 4K YouTube content before using the LG YT app. However yesterday the best it would show is 720p. I had a look on google and their seemed to be posts suggesting 4K was only supported via hdmi connected devices. So I tried the YT app on my Sky Q box and that played in 1080p but still no option to change the quality to 2160p. I then read that apparently this only works on Gen 2 Q boxes. I’ve had mine since launch so its not Gen 2.
Any ideas? The videos in question are definetly 4K as it shows in the video title when searching. If I watch on ipad / iphone its 2160p no problems. I am manually checking quality options rather than leave on auto and 2160p is not there.

I assume your TV is 4K compatible.
IIRC, to access 4K on You Tube is a premium service: you need to subscribe or purchase the programme access, otherwise it defaults to HD.
If all of the above are sorted then there's a couple of things to consider:
Just because a video states that it's 4k doesn't necessarily mean that it is. And the ability to view it is dependent upon your internet speed and capacity.

I've got an LG OLED telly, approx 2 years old. 4K, 48 inch, I forget the model no....Any ideas? The videos in question are definetly 4K as it shows in the video title when searching. Anyway, I can get BBC UHD through the built in iPlayer app, but everything else goes via a Firestick. 4K pretty good from various sources, but not sure about YT - will check later...
It sure is. It’s an older LG OLED but definitely played 4K on YT before as I watched loads of content when I first got it. The videos are definitely legit 4K as have the 4K label not just in the title description. I also tried the YT app on my old PS4 but also no 4K but no idea if that ever worked.
TV is wired to router 74Mbit and has no issues with Netflix or Prime Apps playing at 2160p. Likewise exact same video on ipad & iphone is showing 2160p option.
I thought maybe my LG YT app is just old and something broke but its latest version and it seems even users with new TVs have issues. The more searching I do on this issue it seems that its just pot luck if it works for you - if it doesn't tough luck.

Thanks. Mine is about 6yrs old now. It’s only because I know it worked before that I am so curious. That new owner phase where I was watching all the 4K demo clips and tonnes on YT. If I didnt know that and tried now for first time I would just assume my TV / OS / YT app are too old and don't support 4K. I dont have any other devices like Firestick or AppleTV to try. Would be curious to know how you get on TV app vs Fire stick.Anyway, I can get BBC UHD through the built in iPlayer app, but everything else goes via a Firestick. 4K pretty good from various sources, but not sure about YT - will check later...
I just read a post on reddit that said the way Google/YT CDN works it detects device / OS / app type / network speed and offers accordingly. Which could explain why my apple devices show 2160p no issue. My PC goes up to 1440p but thats the monitor limit as I have a decent GPU (RTX 4070). Actually if I take my PC downstairs and plug into the TV I am pretty sure that will play it in 4K as well.
