I've been trawling ebay for a runaround and am amazed at the general lack of knowledge people have about the cars they're selling.

My current favourite (for a v6 Mondeo @ http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1999-FORD-MONDEO-ST-24-2-5DOHC-V6-167-BHP-FAST-ST24_W0QQitemZ4572904109QQcategoryZ9844QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ) is

"For those of you unfamiliar with the “DOHC” engines, this brand makes the sport engines for the sports cars like Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi EVO8 etc."

Numpty!

I'm sure he'd do you a deal, if you're in the market for a new car...

I can also confirm that they're OK in a smash (I was a passenger in one this morning). Front end looked marginally better afterwards too...

Saw a Ford Laser [KB for those who care] advertised once (Mazda 323 rebaged) as having a Cosworth YB engine, when it was a transversely mounted Mazda B6, now obviously this guy had to go to some effort to install an engine not intended for this particular model, but to be ignorant enough to call it a cosworth is plain scary (makes you wonder what other mistakes were made)

Also saw a Mazda RX7 advertised in a magazine, as having a four cylinder rotary! engine, if that wasn;t bad enough there was a banner across the ad saying 'V6'

Just trying to understand what you mean. DOHC is an abreviation for Double OverHead Camshaft. It can't be a 'brand', the abreviation DOHC is in common public use and therefore can't be registered as a 'brand' name. Perhaps it's a company name and not a brand name.

Erm, that's not strictly true. To paraphrase, I said "a numpty on Ebay is trying to sell his car, yet doesn't know what he's selling, he even thinks DOHC is a brand".

Working with only half the information. The IT department has firewalled e-bay. Now at home I can view the e-bay advert.

A couple of years ago I went with a freind to look at a Golf GTI Turbo he was thinking of buying. It was OK, but it wasnt a Turbo despite the badge on the tailgate. The seller and her son insisted it was a turbo, so I lifted the bonnet and got out a fresh wad of twenties just gotten from the cashpoint, and told the son that he could have the lot if he could point to the turbo. Neither of them could, because it wasnt a turbo, then the hubby turned up and the fact that it wasnt a turbo was news to him too. They had actually been insuring it as a turbo too, all on the strength of some silly little decal that had gotten fixed to the back of the car at some stage in its life.

Ha, got my question put up on the listing!!

I said:
Q: Are you sure DOHC doesn't stand for Double OverHead Camshaft like it does on any other engine that has it printed on it??

He said:

A: I think so as well, but thats what I've been told at the local ford dealer.

Yeah, right mate, sure they did!!
