Driving from J1 to J3 this morning on the M6.

Porsche came behind me in lane 3 going quite quick so I got out the way and went back into the middle lane to allow him to overtake.. I was doing bang on 70mph, he was probably going about 80mph.
I saw a flash coming from a yellow speed camera on the side of the gantry.

I have dashcam footage showing my speed all the way down the motorway just in case ( never exceeding 72mph )

Out of curiosity, are these cameras average speed cameras? There is no chance of it wrongly clocking me is there ?

Thanks

Yes average speed.
They time you between each camera to get the speed.
No they do not make mistakes, and unlikely at 72 read on speedo as it probably over-reads slightly.

Why were you in the outside lane if there was space to your left?

Don't sound like average speed cameras... more likely to be the permanently active HADECS 3 ....

Because he was doing ‘bang on 70’ , of course.

Going past a busy slip road so got out the way of everyone joining then pull back in afterwards.. which is what I usually do to make it easier for everyone joining.

I was going to pull back into the middle lane anyway but as he was driving so quick I pulled back in asap.

Average speed cameras don't flash.

Average speed cameras don't flash. Assume if you're talking about yellow cameras you're talking about the ones that are usually mounted on the left side of a gantry or other post on that side of the road. Usually quite small, rectangular and yellow (although are often not painted grey rather than yellow). These are fixed point cameras photographing speeders at that point - hence the flash.

Where average speed cameras are mounted there is always (I believe?) a warning sign alerting you to them.

Average speed cameras can be seen to flash in the dark, not a road lighting up experience, but you can tell if you look at it head on, there is some visible and likely more night vision equipped dashcam recorded illumination from average camera when it snaps for ANPR read and logging to later compare timings.

They are not average speed, they are HADECS 3

HADECS3 is not an average speed camera system.

D'oh.
I stand corrected.

You mean like using the phrase "back of the net" in response to a post?

Note to self: Never say “back of the net” in a forum post again.

Ah, double whammy of the gruesome-twosome ‘failed to look properly’ and ‘failed to judge path or speed’.

Or "give your head a wobble"!

To the OP, as mentioned, I'm pretty sure they are the HADECS-3 and on lots of smart motorways they are active/enforcing even where variable speed limits are not in force.
