Paris Hotel recommendations
Discussion
I'm planning to take my wife for a long weekend in April.
She is keen to sample baking and patteseries out there - so will prob do a few walking tours.
It is her birthday, so I don't want to stay at a Holiday Inn equivalent, nor can I afford George V.
I'm thinking up to £250/n as we will rarely use functions there, so somewhere wher there is good food places to eat / near the Metro to get about.
Anyone been and have good suggestions?

Oh yes,I can highly recommend some places!
Hotel La Tamise is in rue d'Alger so right in the centre of things but quiet. It's very small, as are the rooms, but is basically perfect.

Maison Armance is in rue Cambon and accessed via a private courtyard, very hard to beat the location. Again, rooms are small, but as with La Tamise the decor, fixtures and fittings are top class and the staff are beyond wonderful.

Those two would be my top recommendations - depending on your taste, it might be worth having a look at the other hotels operated (or at least marketed) by the same organisation... they have a few in Paris, and they're all in the 'a lot nicer than cheap hotels, but not as offensively expensive as the usual luxury places' sort of bracket.
(That said, I can also recommend visiting the bar at either - or both - the Plaza Athénée or Manadarin Oriental hotels!!!)
Enjoy.
(edited, to add: just read your post properly and saw the 'up to £250/night bit'... these are closer to £350-£400/night so might be busting the budget. have a look, though).

We stayed in the Hôtel Château Frontenac just a few minutes walk from George V metro station on the Champs Elysee.
Was very nice and not stupidly priced and has some of the smallest elevators I’ve ever been in!
Excellent location and we’d go back again without reservation (but obviously make a reservation

)We stay at the Mercure Paris Centre Tour Eiffel on Rue Jean Ray.
It is a few minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower and has rooms with tower views. Lots of decent places to eat nearby as well.
I think the airport bus from stops nearby (we just use taxis) and it is handy for the Metro and the river buses.

some great suggestions.
I really hsould get the moths off the wallet and pony up as the first 2 places look lovely.
But then in the back of my mind, I have that annoying 'only resting and keeping bags safe' noise.....
The Mercure is a good option as - esp if you can see the Tower,
Keep the suggestions coming....

Yes I'd recommend (as do tripadvisors), Paris is a nightmare for hotels, you can struggle to find middle ground. Guessing you sharing it mens you'd recommend it (always worth checking rather than assuming!!)
I would say about 4 star, didn't experience the breakfast, the terrace was ok for a sit down outside the room but was behind the other blocks of houses.
It was next to Invalides, Champ De Mars and the Metro 3 min walk etc The view of the tower was good when walking around.

I shared the link with the MiL (it's a surprise trip) and she liked it. I would say about 4 star, didn't experience the breakfast, the terrace was ok for a sit down outside the room but was behind the other blocks of houses.

Now I can say her mother said it looked good in case it doesn't meet her exacting standards.

(I think youd struggle to see value in Paris hotels unless you are involved in searching and see the price that they can charge)

If around the Eiffel Tower you will find hotels with a view are higher in price, this one was walking distances to around the ET, it was near Rue Cler, make sure you go down there its a great experience through a day seeing breakfast and everything starting up through to market setups in the end of the day.
Ate at Le Vauban round the corner and it was great food and service.
I’ve stayed here https://www.hotel-california-paris.com/ not the cheapest but it’s central and the food is good.
Stayed here https://www.hoteldescomedies.com/en during the Rugby World Cup. Nice, clean, breakfast good. Surrounded by bars but quiet. Easy walk to the sites.
It is only 20 mins or so walk from the Euro Star Terminal.

This is a very good hotel for a family break in Paris - especially if you have the car as it has a secure car park - but I'm not sure it quite meets the OP's brief for 'special birthday' hotelIt is a few minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower and has rooms with tower views. It might if he gets a “tower view” room. My family thought it was great
However, I’d agree that without the view it is just another hotel.
