Hi guys,
I have just overhauled the carb (thanks Adrian for the bits) and the car is running much sweeter. It runs fine for 10 miles or so then when pulling away from a start it starts spluttering and missing. Then it is ok for a good few miles again.
Began to wonder wether there is water in the fuel, so pumped some into a clean glass jar. At the bottom of the jar there is some other liquid seperate from the fuel and floating within. Is this how water and petrol behave?

Yep.

If there's water in the tank you need to drain it and let it dry out for a bit. You may also find some in the float chamber - worth cleaning it out for the sake of the time involved.

Had a similar problem many years back found it to be a clogged up fuel filter. A £10 filter verses hours of carb strip down ??? Changing the filter often wouldn't do any harm. Its a cure not prevention IF your tank is getting water in OR its full of crap it will continue. Clean out the tank change the filter - period. The carbs another matter.......
