Route des Cretes (Vosges)

I’m planning a anti clockwise trip down across through France over to the Black Forest area and up towards the Nurburgring and back towards Blighty in the summer..

Any pointers as the the best route to take from the Mulhouse (Cernay) area onto the Route des Cretes heading towards St Marie aux Mines before heading into Germany.

Is the any better routes as there seems to be a myriad of ways to do this?

Also south to north or north to south ?

Any advice/ pointers appreciated.

From memory via the river route is pretty stunning through all the Gorges. The Vosges is a fabulous little region.
