Hi,

Can anyone help..?

My bike has been written off Cat B. I'd like to collect the bike and break it for parts. Perhaps even export it.

The storage company are suggesting it can only be collected / delivered to an ATF.. Authorised Treatment Facility for it to be scrapped.
Is this true?
I'd like to collect it myself, take parts off it etc etc that I can sell then dispose of it myself at an ATF or export it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Surely if it’s been written off it belongs to the insurer not you.

I’d guess they’re right and it can only be sold to somebody who can dispose of it directly or break or for spares.

Edit: unless you don’t claim and then it’s not written off

One presumes that if it has already been written off, the insurance has paid out. So it now belongs to the insurance company, not you. You’d have to buy it back if you now want to strip the parts off it and sell them.

Because its a CAT B means it cannot go back on the road, ever. If it's released to a person thats not an official breaker then what's to stop that person selling or reusing a part thats beens seriously compromised?
Thats what we said whenever dealing with a CAT B total loss. Makes sense.

Cat B parts can be recycled but the vehicle belongs to the insurance company now if they've already paid out on it.

Have you bought it back from the insurers?

Have you asked if it’s possible to remove the parts at the storage facility?

You definitely won’t be able to remove it yourself as they have mentioned for the reasons already posted on here.

Yes some parts can be sold on, by an authorised dealer, not by Joe Bloggs.

I bought a smashed up scooter from a breakers recently, it was salvage parts only but they said they would sell it complete but have to cut some frame sections out to avoid any chance of it being repaired.

I asked then to cut it in half to fit in the car easier. Then I tried haggling for half price but they weren't having it.

Fine at a breakers…not at the storage yard before the insurance co sell it
