Lambo signs off anniversary with Dubai Police Urus

2023 already feels an age ago, but Lamborghini did manage to squeeze in one more big birthday treat...

Nobody could accuse Lamborghini of half-measures when it came to its 60th anniversary in 2023. As well as revealing its first factory-backed sportscar racer, it launched the first Lamborghini series production hybrid. And made lots of excellent Huracan Sterratos. It was a good year for Lamborghini.

The celebrations didn’t end there, however, as in a final surprise for the big 6-0, Lambo gave the Dubai Police an Urus Performante. Because of course they did. The handover was part of the Dubai Airshow in December, though information and images have only now been made widely available.

Any kind of Urus is guaranteed to make an impact (that’s precisely the point), and there’ll certainly be no missing this 666hp Performante in its trademark green with white livery. Though mechanically standard, the Lamborghini has been prepared and upgraded for use as an actual police vehicle - this is no mere show car. So there are lights and sirens, of course, plus a ‘special compartment in the boot for storing service equipment’, an armoured gun box and a defibrillator. Always good to have both.

As you might expect, none of that has made a significant impact on the performance of the Urus, with 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds still claimed and a top speed of 190mph. Just what you need to keep pace (and the peace) with everything else in Dubai.

In one of the stranger press release soundbites, Dubai Police's acting commander-in-chief General Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani said the new Performance ‘will support Dubai police in their commitment to better serve residents, maintain social safety and security, and provide services in popular tourist destinations.' Quite a lot for one car to do.

Lambo's Middle East boss, Paolo Sartori, added: “We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Dubai Police, supporting them in their crucial public safety mission. Following our delivery of an Urus to the force in 2022, this new Urus Performante edition will be used to carry out a range of public duties and, above all, will help enhance the city’s security and safety, with this initiative further demonstrating our brand’s longstanding presence here in the UAE.” Beats carrying out a range of public duties in a Peugeot 308. And what a way to travel to the station if you ever are on the wrong side of the law…

Conspicuous consumption the gulf states remains, for me, the strongest argument for buying an EV.

The Dubai police supercars are all either donations from the manufacturer, or cheap leases from local dealers.

They use them at exhibitions and public events, and it projects a positive image of police and policing to the population. Want to drive a supercar, then join the police!

Nice bit of product placement in a place where a kot of yoir product is marketed and sold. Shame our police have to make do with diesel astras!

Yes, most of the police liveried super exotics seen are just show cars, besides they would be totally impractical for police use, at least that SUV could be practical.

The 0-60 accelaration is no suprise but can that really do 190 mph?

Seems odd that the country with such oil resources are using EV's, Dubia is blessed both with lots of oil and gas but great solar energy potential also with mandatory solar panels installed on all buildings by 2030.

Big advantage of EVs often overlooked is the home power storage potential, car plugged in at home with smart charging and discharging to smooth out the national grid peaks and low demand times of day.

Lots of electric used there for aircon, biggest demand time close to when solar energy generation peaks, so for them Renewables and EV's could make sense even when they have huge oil resources already.

They do actually use them for police work though too.

When I stayed at the B-A-A 18mths ago I followed the police liveried AM over the bridge to the portculis - the Alfa was already there and they were dealing with a guest who claimed to have been robbed on the beach outside the Jumeriah hotel on the mainland opposite.

"Enhance the city's security" ? I suppose a Lambo as spectacularly crass as a Urus is just the thing for cracking down on freedom of expression, harassing gay people and helping to ensure targets are met for random imprisonment . Or maybe that is news for the PH staffer who reproduced this lazy and cynical PR guff?

Have you been to Dubai? You can drink, wear whatever you want and, provided you don't rub it in people's faces, basically do whatever you want. I've seen prostitutes propositioning people in Dubai Mall and JBR. It's a cesspool of bad behaviour, and is basically the brothel of the Gulf region.

As an aside, it also feels incredibly safe, and I'd happily walk around any part of Dubai without serious concern - something you can't say about many Western cities!

Electricity is actually pretty expensive here, at least when compared to the 60p/litre I just paid for a tank of Super 98. Electric cars are getting more popular, but as elsewhere mostly among those who own houses and can charge overnight.

There’s huge investment in solar and nuclear going on over here for power generation, as you say most of the energy use is for air conditioning which matches solar production.

Much better to save the O&G for exporting.
