I’ve had a lengthy email today, apparently from Capita advising me that my data has been leaked as part of some big data breach. It lists a lot potential pieces of data that may have been exposed, but doesn’t say specifically what data of mine is involved, or in fact specifically what business they had with my data in the first place. It does say they have been involved in HR and Payroll services, so I am assuming it’s in connection with my job, but if that were the case why did it come to my personal email? I would have expected my employer to notify me too, which they haven’t.

Is this legit? There is some stuff Google about Capita and data, but not a lot.

If it is genuine, should I be worried? The email suggests there’s no evidence my data has turned up on the dark web, but that I can have a free 12 months dark web monitoring via Experian just in case…

All a bit weird really.

It may not be your current employer or even any employer.

I got notified a while back by a past pension provider who used Capita.

Assuming the email itself is legitimate the Experian 12 month thing is legit as I'm using it.

Just be careful as it seems stupidly expensive for what it does outside the 12 months free period but I've never had to give them any payment/card details.

Late last September, I received a letter from the trustees of a pension plan of which I’m a deferred pensioner.

Capita’s cyber attack in March 2023 was notified to the pension plan Trustee in late July.

As my data was on an ‘affected server’ the Trustee listed the data that was likely stolen, which is in summary everything personal and confidential you could expect, for myself (and my family from the expression of wish details).

But its all ok, the trustee has given me 12 months free access to Identity Plus, an Experian identity monitoring service.

Plus some free tips about how I should protect my email with strong passwords and not to open emails from strangers.

Capita, another of the mysteriously successful but simultaneously feckless IT providers to govt and councils.
