Something I've always wondered is the "unofficial" speed limit on motorways

The legal limit is obviously 70mph, but very few people follow this when there's no cameras

The only people I know who've gotten a nip from a police officer were doing over 90mph

I know a few people who have gotten pulled between 85-90, but just got a warning from the officer

So, is 90mph the "unofficial" speed limit on the motorway?

Has anyone here gotten a nip from a police officer for doing below 90, or even below 80 for that matter?

I had a pull and 3 points for 78mph in 2010

Damn, 78?
Was it in a variable speed zone of the motorway, or the usual 70 zone?

I have been pulled in the car many times. First time was when I was 18.

Welcome to piston heads.
There have been a loads of threads of people being done for speeds under 90.
The police have a guidance where if you do 10%+2 over the limit, or above, you will be prosecuted.
So the 'unofficial speed limit' on a motorway w a 70 limit would be 78 mph.
That is only guidance though. They can prosecute at 71.

By a police officer or a camera though?

I would imagine mostly by cameras, although I wouldn't want to put a percentage on it.

This is why I tend to set the cruise control to an indicated 77 mph on clear motorways. I used to drive faster and 'scan the horizon' for traps, but that is a very stressful way to go about life and I'm a lot calmer now.

It's a shame the general mumblings in parliament around a raise to 80 mph have died the death in the last decade thanks to the environmental cost of doing so.

Context will also be important. Say if it's a handheld radar - if weather is rubbish, or if other lanes were congested at 60mph and someone is in lane 3 at 78+...

Whereas if the traffic is flowing well at 80, maybe the police are just targeting the 90mph+ to throw the book at.

Yep 78mph on a quiet dual carriageway in perfect conditions, camera. 3 points. 67mph in a 60, same conditions, 3 points. Both in last couple of years, North Yorkshire.

I now set my cruise at limit plus 10%, which in real terms in a 70 is 73mph.

I guess it depends on where you are and whats tagged you

A little while ago I went past a car dug in so well I didnt see it until the last second at 90mph at 7am on a saturday morning on a deserted M1 and after expecting the worst heard nothing

On the other hand a mate got pulled for doing 79mph on the M40 - also when quiet

And the Terminator option is a van parked on a bridge in Cumbria issuing tickets at ????? speed thresholds to people who didnt even see it

So back to my post in the uninsured thread - I now try to use cruise control on motorways and its almost always set at 79mph which probably translates to 76/77mph if measured accurately

Cheers

???

His inaccurate speedometer registers 77mph, when the vehicle is traveling at 73mph, which he deems a suitable cruising speed for our motorway network.

I assumed their gender.

Why the ???, he is saying he reckons his speedometer reads 4mph over the actual speed.

I had wrongly assumed he set his cc according to the satnav speedo, as that's what I do.

Copper did me for 87mph on the m62 2002

I’ve also been done for 92mph and 89mph on the m18 that was back in 2008
