W202 2.5TD Coolant Bleeding

A question for the MB PH brains please. A mate has a '96 2.5 TD engine transplant in his G Wagen. Engine is OM 605.960 I believe.
It's overheating after a garage did something involving a bit of new coolant (but not a coolant change from a service), but he's not keen on taking it back, so he's asked me to have a look. We ran it up and I did a good load of coolant pipe and heater pipe squeezing and got a few bubbles but I don't think the stat opened.
It was a turnkey job, so he's not clear on exactly what's required, nor do Haynes do a book of lies for a C Class TD swapped G!
We've ordered a new stat, but could do with some advice on coolant type and also bleeding procedure, if anyone can help, before we soak his drive and my arm.
