Anyone any knowledge of kids electric bikes?

My lad has one of these bikes from funbikes. It's a 36v 800W pit bike thing and he wants to upgrade it for more performance.

Is this simply a case of buy a 1000W motor and swap it out or is there more to it than that?

The controller etc won't be able to power a 1kW motor to full power.

Yes, very similar to the one shown. Presumably a new control unit and motor would sort it?

You need to look into the controller - it may be rated higher than 1000w, you never know. It's rare to build ESCS to exact specs of motors.
