Hi,
New to the forum as well as Porsche ownership.
Have recently bought 1986 924S for trackday mayhem.
Only problem ( apart from knackered suspension and strong smell of petrol when tank is full!!!!! )is it appears to use about as much oil as it does fuel, with plenty of white smoke on overun. Seems fairly clear on startup / hard acceleration though....
I've done a compression test and all cyclinders have come out around the 10.5 / 11 mark on the gauge.
Anybody out there advise if it could be valve guides?
Also any suggestions for tuning / blueprinting in the Midlands area would be welcome
Cheers,
Nick

Could well be head gasket - in the midlands I'd definately recommend PCT Cars near coventry (service arm of Autobahn, www.pctcars.co.uk/, 08456 444993, on the A45 between Coventry and Birmingham airport) to do any work on the car.
Also I'm not sure if ninemeister is near you - he seems to be the daddy for pork tuning....

dear cummingsa,
Thank you for your helpful observations.
Hopefully next time the 'beast' is unleashed, some of the previous maladies will have been remedied!
( Cue sounds of burning rubber / thrashed motor et al...)
NB: I would of course take your comments far more seriously if you could actually manage a lap of Donnington without paying a visit to one of the convenient gravel 'rest areas' they have thoughtfully provided for those aptitudally-challenged clients, such as yourself.
Best regards,
Nick

Try the following... warm the car up, accelerate in 3rd until you get to 5000rpm and then take your foot off the accelerator and let it coast while you count to ten and then plant your right foot. If you get a big cloud of oily smoke then the chances are that you've either got valve stem seal issues or valve guide issues or both.
I had these symptoms and was using oil. When I took the cam box off I found 3 of the 8 stem seals in bits. I replaced them and it's solved the problem.
It's a relatively easy job but you'll need 8 stem seals, a allen key socket which reaches through the access holes in the cam box and some way to tension the belt when you're done.
You can change the stem seals with the head on using soft rope to hold the valves in place and a valve spring compressor like this one...

If the smoke is white then it's probably something else.
Good luck,
Mark
