Average speed cameras set to?
Discussion
Apologies if this has already been extensively covered - I looked back through the threads and couldn't see anything. Does anybody know what speed average cameras are set to? Is it the same as normal speed cameras which my understanding is 10% plus 2. So for a normal camera you're 'safe' anything under 79 (70 + 10% + 2mph) - so for an average say 50mph camera would that be the same - ie 57? Anybody know? Cheers.

They aren't 'set' to anything. They just work out your average speed, and they do this for every vehicle with a numberplate. The decision on whether to prosecute is set locally.
OK so does anybody know roughly what the 'locals' set them at? ie at what speed over do you get done? Anybody got any examples? Is there much variation between different areas?Asking for a friend.

Enforce would be a better description. At least 99% of offenders over the enforcement threshold are not prosecuted but are instead offered a course or fixed penalty. jamesgareth said:

Average cameras around Bristol will ticket you at 57. One of our engineers assumed the same as you, 10% + 2, he was wrong

GPS 57mph or 57mph on the clock? I've set my cruise to 57mph through 50mph average zones for years and never had a ticket. This is mainly M4 and M25 in Thames Valley.
Our chap said GPS. Still seems to be sailing close to the wind to me, but then I am an old git and reformed speeder

Seems that people are being deliberately obtuse. I don't know the answer, but the OP's question is very clear.
Right - I thought I was pretty darn clear too. :-) I've lost my licence four times so far (63 years old and counting).
I'd rather not make it five.
