Last week my Chim leaked like a sieve. Following a quick search on this site.... Thompson's Patio Sealant.... marvellous. Every night last week I put at least two coats on. I also sealed the rivets holding the Engine/Chasis plate on and now..... it doesn't leak. I invested £22 in an electric heater and have had it on all weekend drying the interior and this mroning I could see out all the windows as I drove to work at 7:30. Shoud I have bought a Honda...... I don't bloody think so !!!!!

My only problem now is water getting into the rear light covers and misting them over. It appears they are only held on with black squidge..... should I get my Stanley out and cut them off and attempt a reseal, or is this asking for trouble ?

I seem to recall in the S series forum, there was something recommended to help seal the rear lights... can't remember what it was called though...

Yeah good stuff!

I had to laugh last time I did mine. It comes in that huge tin, so I pour some out into a small jar to carry round. Pouring it into the jar at the back of the house I missed the opening slightly and it spilled onto the flagstones. Cursed the thing, then remembered it was supposed to be used on patios.....

Following the monsoon over the weekend, and getting caught out in the rain, guess what ....drivers rear lense now a fish bowl. Having never removed the rear lense, does it come away fairly easily...

I checked the S series thread and apparantly you just cut through the existing sealant with a sharp knife taking care of the bodywork. It's then a question of cleaning off the existing squidge and resealing with the B&Q black stuff in the slot. The lens just fits back into the new channel of squidge and any tidying can be done from 'inside'. Sounds simple, armed with a knife and a tube of squidge I shall attempt the procedure at the weekend.

The thompson's product to use on the hood is Thompson's Water Seal... not Ultra or Patio cleaner as neither of these products are recommended for use on canvas. These use a different chemistry that is not suitable for canvas apparently.

Certain naughty people used to drill holes in the fibre glass to drain the water rather than refit the lense.

The Nearside ones are always the worse as when you get the petrol filling operation wrong and it clicks and comes over the cap (oh missus) it runs all along the boot groove and down the rear light onto your trousers, but mainly eats into the sealent giving over time a pin hole to let the water in

very cool at the filling station

Thanks Dulu, I'll try and get some of the black stuff and give it a shot over the weekend.

I'd suggest that before you replace and seal the cover, make sure it's a nice dry sunny day and maybe even blast the area with a hair dryer, to remove as much moisture as possible. Otherwise you might find that it mists up later.

"The thompson's product to use on the hood is Thompson's Water Seal... not Ultra or Patio cleaner..."

Thanks shpub, but I did use the Water Seal and avoided the other products having followed earlier threads about the same subject..... I used 'Patio Sealant' with a touch of poetic licence, in that it struck me as slightly bizarre to smear your £35k car with patio sealant.

Phew... The other stuff as some really nasty chemistry in it that could rot cloth or soften GRP! The Patio selaent is actually a penetrating urethane stuff that is like varnishing your car with Ronseal. The Water Seal is a traditional silicone stuff.
