Just a quick survey of PH. How many people have divorced parents? How old were you when they divorced?

And most importantly (both if your parents stayed together or divorced), do you think you benefitted from it or has it disadvantaged you, or is it a mix of both?

My Parents are still married, however my Dad was married before, his wife waked out on him, leaving him to bring up two young Daughters.

What I remember most was that their Mum used to appear then disappear again, she would make promises then let them down regularly, and when she did see them, the youngest one always came home in tears.

My Mum always tried to treat the three of us equally, which whilst I understood I hated, I wanted to be treated just that little bit different.

I also remember some terrible rows, right up until after they had left home....the older Sister left home at 16 and moved to her Mums, my parents haven't really had any contact with her since, my Mum was gutted not even a thankyou when she left.

Dad nearly didn't go to my other Sisters wedding as her Mum was going.

Despite their Mum walking out and abandoning them when they were still babies, both now have a very close relationship with their Mum, and have more contact with her than their Dad.

What does not kill you makes you stronger.

Life is a journey. Good and Bad. Roll with the punches and savour the good times. Helps having a soul mate to share it with, but sooner or later we all find the one.

Cheers

Mike

In a roaring endorsement of the ability for Brits and Yanks to get along, my parents are happily married 43 years. Neither one was previously married.

Hmm.. Father left when I was about 15 I think, after some pretty rough times and they divorced a couple of years later. As he was leaving we had a little heart to heart during which I discovered he'd been previously married and there ws a step sister somewhere I never knew about. I think he only married the once after my folks split, but as I didn't keep in contact, I'm not too sure. Certainly didn't get on too well with the wife that buried him a few months ago; had 8 hours notice on a Sunday evening to get to his funeral, (oddly enough didn't make it).

I am who I am inspite of this, not because of it.

Wow. You must not be much older than I am (I had always assumed that you were more grown up). My parents have been married for 37 years. Also, neither were previously married.

My parents divorced when I was 11, my mother has re-married and father is still single.

Oops! Forgot the advantages/disadvantages part....

Both parent's worked before and after the divorce but all 3 of us kids decided to live with our mother. Dad had a decent lawyer so didn't get stuck so bad with child care payments, but that meant that when my 2 older siblings left for college that me and Mom almost starved.

It also ended my school plans which were to go to a ski racing academy, I never got out of the Pacific Northwest division and had a chance at races on the national level (I was earning World Cup points when I quit at 18) but will never know where I my have ended up. One of my teammates did make it to the World Cup and now runs his own Ski School at our old ski area.

Disadvantages, for me I would have to say yes, but perhaps life would have been worse had they stayed together it was sure headed that way.

My parents' divorce was the best thing that could have happened for both of them.

They slept in separate bedrooms for about 8 years prior to it!

It has made me realise that people should never stay together to financial reasons alone - it's not worth it.

For the record, my parents are now very close friends. My father is very ill and my mother is still very much there for him, helping out in ways she can. Thankfully they have never lost their mutual respect for one another.

I guess as divorces go, it was a pretty pleasant one. Just expensive.
