Which countries do car parts originate?
Discussion
My daughter has a geography school project looking at where parts for anything come from?
I thought it would be interesting for her to find out where vehicle components come from (I recall mini engines were from Brazil and shipped to the uk many years ago). I also recall a Topgear from years ago explaining globally where car parts are mined, sourced from.
We live near Oxford so obviously I started there and found 41% of MINI parts originate in the uk.
But I can’t find where the other 59% of parts come from!
It doesn’t have to be a MINI (any vehicle will do) but does anyone have any information on where parts come from for any car at all?
Any help would be much appreciated.
It does not have to be comprehensive just a for a 13 year olds school project.

Car parts are made all over the place to be honest. A lot of OE are made in Japan Germany and the EU.
Take Gates for an example, they make rubber timing belts and supply OE and have factories around the world, the main UK one is in Dumfries.
Then you get to the aftermarket and they are made in China, Taiwan, South Korea as well as the EU. Basically where cost are lowest
If I was doing the project define OE or aftermarket. Then if OE look at the vehicles and make contact with the PR side. They are usually very helpful with things like that if you get the right person.
If aftermarket call Firstline in Bicester, and BGA in Swindon and they will probably give you some information

It's an almost impossible thing to define. Materials will be mined in one country, refined in a second place, turned into small parts in a third then assembled into increasingly larger parts in fourth, fifth and sixth countries before being shipped a final country for assembly. I suspect a lot of even quite simple components have sub-elements which have passed through 10+ different countries before they finally get shipped to the manufacturer, let alone to a customer.
A lot of electronics are/were made in Ukraine.

Thanks for the replies.
Perhaps your right it's too complex a product.
I will do some digging more but I know body panels are made in Swindon along with various sub-assemblies, engines come from Birmingham and Austria depending on spec. I have read that cranks used to come from france, then to uk back to Austria / Germany and then back to the UK!
I know about the wiring certainly on Audi's from Ukraine, so i will get her to list this along with china for elec bits.
Thanks again

From memory any car assembled in Europe has to have a minimum % from Europe to be classed as European for duty purposes.
However, the rules allow parts to be classed as European if a certain % of “value add” is done in Europe.
So, if you asked a manufacturer where bits of the car come from they’d say “80% Europe” but it might be a bit more grey than that.
