Garage charge customer warranty overhead costs
Discussion
Hi All,
I had a clutch fitted approx 10 months ago and it started slipping. Usually my clutches in cars last about ten years or more so something is definitely not right.
The garage that fitted the part stated the clutch was still within a 12 month warranty, and took the car back. They recently rang and said the clutch plate would need to be sent off to the manufacturer to be checked and that it would take about three months. In the mean time, they wanted all the warranty work paid for by me pending the outcome, a bill of approx £1.1k.
Should the manufacturer admit component fault, I’d eventually get a refund via the clutch manufacturer.
Surely a garage has a responsibility to cover overheads of warranty work…is there anything legal that says they have to do this?
I thought the whole point of allowing garages to source the parts was for parts quality & warranty assurance. What are my rights with this? Thanks

The garage supplied and fitted the clutch, and charged you for doing the job.
So they are responsible for correcting the problem under THEIR warranty, free of charge to you.
It’s then up to the garage to return the faulty part to THEIR supplier and make a claim to cover their costs.
I’m sure the PH legal eagles will quote the correct situation in law.
