Autoglass are changing the front screen on my 02 996 TT on Monday (crack appeared from nowhere)
I made sure when I spoke with them that they had the right one - ie radio ariel built in, rain sensor built in etc.
I don't have any choice as my insurance specifies Autoglass.

Anyone have any experiences, things to watch out for etc. I have visions of them not doing it right as its probably not a car they do that often.

My friend had similar worries when they came to do his F355. They did a fantastic job. My experiences with them have always been superb. It's a rare machine, but it's a car with a windscreen, they do it all day everyday.

AutoGlass fitted a new windscreen a few years ago to my then Boxster S. Arrived with all the right bits including the silver windscreen surround that the S models have. Did a great job too. Like you it was via my insurance policy so had no choice but very happy with the results. If you get the OPC to fit a new screen, they'll charge you a fortune and guess what? It will most likely be AutoGlass who do the work!

Every time I popped in at my then dealer (OPC Sutton Coldfield) there was always an AutoGlass or Chips Away van parked there!!

Ro.

Ive had 2 new windscreens in the last 2 months on
my GT3 RS and they did a good job - these where both different depots one in London one in Gatwick area
the only thing to look out for is the Autoglass tax disc holder which they leave on the windscreen - it
somehow does not look right in a Porsche !
+ its a bug**r to get off ....

Had my 996 C2 windscreen replaced a few months back (conveniently, no more deliaminating bottom corner! )...mine was done by RAC Windscreens thro the ins company as well. Good lads, were very careful, but they hadn't seen the clear film that was stuck under the window seal, they initially commented that "whoever had replaced it before had damaged the laquer"...of course, it wasnt laquer at all.

They also said they sealed the edges of the new screen properly before installing, to prevent the corner(s) from delaminating again; make sure they do this on your new 'screen, Ro.

Ro, watch out – my 996TT had a new windshield fitted at an OPC by someone like xxxxshield before I bought it. 6 weeks after I had the car a massive crack appeared from the top of the screen. I got a very well know guy in my area to replace the glass, he found the crack that I had assumed was caused by a stone chip had actual been caused from fitting the previous screen.

There is a plastic frame in which the glass sits (this doesn’t come with a new screen) and it had been damaged from the previous fitment – cracked alone the top edge. When they fitted the rubber, pressing it in against the frame, it was flexing unduly – they somehow forced the rubber with a tool and caused a small chip on the top edge of the glass. Over time this chip became the crack.

Make sure who ever is fitting the screen understands that the frame needs to be perfect to avoid this sort of thing.

Do'nt know know if it helps, but Northampton branch make a right pigs ear of re-fitting mine 82'

even with new OPC steel trim, which they asked for, since they insisted spray shop, had ruined original when removing screen pre-paint.

I would never use them again personally, given the off hand
"thats the best we can do with it" attitude of fitter/manager.

Autoglass grazed my A pillar down to the bare metal and failed to tell me! Admittedly when I found the damage they allowed me to get it repaired and paid up without a problem.

The guy used a sharp knife to cut the windscreen rubber and it was ths knife that had done the damage.

How timely ! Just had my windscreen replaced by Autoglass this morning. After their initial inability to locate the right windscreen earlier in the week, due to a new IT system, the fella turned up on time with radio blaring.

Took around an hour, and im now gonna take her for a spin now to make sure it is glued in!

Great call on not getting the Autoglass tax disc !

Oh I forgot to add - to my great amusement, I found the fitter grubbing underneath the dash - when I asked him what he was doing he told me he'd spent the last hour searching for the radio aerial amplifier.

I guess I can't blame him for not knmowing that despite the RS sharing the standard 964 'screen, complete with inbuilt radio aerial, the car does not come with any audio equipment as standard.
