Hi all, hope someone can help here:

Family emergency, the in-laws are arriving this week and it'd be incredibly useful to insure them on my wife's motor. Problem is this seems impossible at reasonable cost.

She's with Aviva who I've yet to call but past experience is they'll want a lot more money than it costs to just rent something.

The temp insurance people won't quote. They're 73/70, Ozzy licences, he's got an international licence, and the cars a Subaru Forrester turbo.

Seems incredible, he drives an SL65 and she a turbo scoob and clean licences, but in britain computer says no! In Oz we can just drive all their cars, even the old SL55 although the '65 has restrictions!

Presumably the issue is one of risk to the insurer - not for this individual risk - but the risk of insuring an overseas visitor and then in the event of an accident, it being really hard to get their view of events or worse case, attendance in court?

Some other thoughts:

I guess it depends on the insurance Co. I have a Swedish license, but a mate had no problem insuring me on his car in the UK. Think it cost 25 quid for a week.

ETA - maybe it's easier with an EU license tho !

Just rent something then.

Straightforward, commonly done by people who come here on holiday.

Resolves you of any grief or responsibility.

Your inlaws can organise it all before they arrive.

My Dad did it for me (Oz license) twice last year. Just rang his broker and they added me on for 3 weeks.

I just provided a copy of my driver record from the State Gov’s website.

Cost him next to nothing.

If they are planning less than a month I would be tempted to hire them a fiat 500/aygo size car for the duration. I doubt space for traveling about is the focus of the visit.

We have good friends in Florida we do a house swap with; last year we offered our car when they visited (Skoda Scala) and our only option was a stand alone temporary police for the two weeks they were here, which cost circa £250. They are visiting again in April and given insurance has gone up I dread to think what it will be. They are very generous with us so we covered it last time, and will do again unless it’s cheaper for us to hire them a car.

We used Sterling Insurance for the temporary cover.

Best hire something then there's no come back on your insurance should something happen
One of their problems is age. Once over 70 you become an insurance liability (allegedly) and your premium starts to rise or you struggle for cover with some companies.

I think your definition of a “family emergency” differs from mine.

Rent a car. Adding people on your car to your insurance is a nightmare waiting to become reality, especially if they don't regularly drive in UK.

I can be, but the kind of self absorbed coldness to observe the quoted phrase and in the absense of any qualifying information whatsoever, be uable to have the tact/self control to repress employing it in trying to be an internet forum badass is not going to bring it out, and nor should it.

Did you have a brain storming meeting with the HR deptartment to come up with that word salad?

I rather think that the OP is saying that they are coming because of a family emergency, not that their coming is a family emergency.
But I could be wrong.
