There is a speed camera near Heathrow which is just after a 40 mph limit sign. On the back of the camera there is a 30 mph sign which has recently been changed from a 40 mph. The camera sign is smaller than a normal speed limit change so would I be flashed if I went past the camera at 40 mph. If I did get flashed then would it be enforceable? You can see that when I go past the 40 mph sign it is showing a 30 mph limit starts going the other way. Video below:

Not sure I get what your question is, the signage in your direction clearly shows 40, so that's it. It's quite common to have DC's with different limits in different directions

The limit sign on the speed camera on my side of the road is a 30 though. I would have thought that if they changed the sign on the camera then they would have changed the detection limit in the camera as well. If I went past the camera at 40 and it went off would it be a valid ticket?

Ok you said on the back of the camera which confused the issue. So are you saying the sign on the speed camera facing you where you have frozen the image says 30 (it's impossible to read it on the video) If that's the case then the limit has dropped from 40 to 30.If it's only just changed it may be worth checking there is a TRO in place

Woudld also think 40. Isn't correct signage and ingredient of the offence?

Incidentally someone tried to convince me that it a DC had different speed limits each side then it becomes 2 one way streets! Made my brain hurt.

I know the feeling, I think I became overwhelmed with both it, and the desire to drive away very very fast when on a speed awareness course many moons ago. laugh

Yes, there is a sign stuck to the back of the camera which says 30 but is smaller than the usual limit changes and isn't on a post on both sides of the road like normal limit changes are.

Sorry chap but your description is just confusing, anything stuck on the back of a camera facing the other direction is irrelevant On your video you drove past 2 signs one on the right and one on the left both showing 40 and then about a 100m further on a camera on the left with what looks like a limit sign underneath on the post, what was the limit shown on this sign?

No you're just confused. The back of the camera is in fact facing you is it not? To answer your question it's 30.

Thanks, yes the back of the camera is facing me when approaching it. So you are saying that a small 30 sign in the back of the camera overrides the normal 40 signs in each side of the road? Someone better tell the car manufacturers as my car still thought it was a 40.

I'm no expert, but that doesn't look enough to change to limit from 40 to me. I thought the sign had to be round with a red border. That is a blue, rectangular sign with a small image of a proper 30 limit sign on it - a camera warning sign with a reminder of the (incorrect) limit. Could be that the wrong limit was put on it in error. I still wouldn't go through it above 34 though as fighting it would be a PITA.

Are there any 40 repeaters beyond the camera?

Care to share a Google Maps/Street View link?

Here is the start of the 40

Here is the camera before the sign was changed.

Here is a photo of a similar sign that is now on the back of the camera.

The small sign was stuck on the camera facing the driver. I thought that any speed changes had to be signed like the first link and have the limit on the large circular signs on both sides of the carriageway. There is no change to the limit after the camera until you see 40 repeaters after the roundabout.

That is a 30 limit.

All of these comments are what I would be doing.

Many years age I was told to "always obey the last instruction" and that would be driving my understanding of these pics.

I've just looked on the highway code site and this sign doesn't appear in the "Road signs giving orders" section. I did find this in another government "signs" book which seems to indicate it is a repeater sign warning a camera is near:

That's how I understand it. It's effectively a repeater/reminder of the current limit before a camera/area where enforcement likely

So it is a 30 limit then, like I said.

I would disagree, there is nowhere where the speed limit has changed from 40 - 30.

As I said above, that is what I would be doing just to be safe.
