Not up to speed on it, but wouldn't you let insurer know before they sell to some salvage company?

If you’ve already had the cheque then unless you indicated otherwise before settlement then the car belongs to the insurance company.

I stand to be corrected but I think it’s too late now to buy the car back but a phone call wouldn’t go amiss.

As to why it’s sitting there, maybe it’s just slipped through the cracks. Normally they are very quick in getting them uplifted.

If you want to keep it, the cheque needs to be a settlement reflecting the fact you still owm the car.
If they've paid out in full, they own the wreck

You need to read everything carefully and know where you stand.

What is the cat status of the car? You may not have the option to keep it.

Very aware they own the car now etc..more after experiences people have had. I'm gonna call them and ask what they would need from me to keep the car

As said, what is the CAT status of the car? If it's A or B it can't go back on the road & needs to be crushed.

They didn't give a definition as they never came to look at it

They just called it a Total Loss claim

To me it looks very repairable as its rear quarter panel, rear bumper and the light, the crash bumper thing looks fine but I don't really know what I'm looking for

My 3 Series got a tap in the rear last year and the insurer of the guy that hit me classified it as a Cat N (before they bothered to tell me).

Damage was only to the rear bumper cover so I wanted to keep it and got it for 22% of their valuation so that might give you an indication, although you probably should have told them before they paid you!

Everything is very repairable but I'm sure once you get a quote for such a large amount of damage, you'll probably change your mind about wanting to keep it.

Yeah I'm not gonna pay a chunk to keep it unless I get a steal.

I'm just hoping somehow they would.let me have it cheap enough that I could then just sort a rear bumper and light, probably sell the wheels and the seats and turn it into a track/drift car

You needed to tell them that you wanted to keep the car before they paid out. The car now belongs to the insurance company, so they will ‘dispose’ of it.

Your best chance is to say that you can save them some costs, by allowing them to dispose of it by letting you keep it. They will then tell you how much they want and it’s down to you whether you want to accept. You might get to bargain with them a bit, but they tend to be a bit ruthless - they already have a figure in mind based on their experience of selling similar write-offs through auction.

Car belongs to the insurers once they have paid you. Hence it will be incurring storage charges at a daily rate….anyone know what the going rate is? Then get a price to buy it back and offset the charges.

There are processes you can go through to legally dispose of the car even if it belongs to the insurer, should they fail to collect it.

I wouldn't have thought you'd need to go that far though. Simply call them up and ask them to have it collected/will they let you keep it.

Hey guys I think I have done a terrible job of explaining where I am at and what I am looking for so appreciate the advice from different angles.

➡️ Car was defined as a "Total Loss" I have not been made aware of the category. No physical inspection has taken place as far as I am aware
➡️They paid out a decent amount
➡️I cashed in the cheque, its has cleared
➡️It is still sat on my street

I am now wondering what the journey could be to own the car, I am not too bothered either way (as already mentioned by someone else, if I had really wanted to keep it I would have chatted through with them before they paid out)However as more time passes and no collection or call about collection is happening I am wondering what may or may not happen at this stage

I understand the car is now legally owned by the insurer/their salvage partner etc (Copart)

If I was able to keep the car at a silly low prices I would. So I guess to be more clear my questions are:

➡️ Does anyone have any experience of this?
➡️ Any tips for how to get a good deal if so .... e.g. part of me wonders if I just wait they will forget long enough that I will get a better price.
➡️ Any other ideas etc?

Car is a manual Z4 3.0si Coupe.

Thanks smile

OP, ring your Insurance Company, they are the ones who can give you answers to all your questions. Thye may not be the answers you want, but at least you will know..

One quick question for you. Have you sent the V5 to the Insurance Co?

I'm not sure you should. My insurers told me to send the V5 to the DVLA - although I did need to list the address of the salvage company, which is tricky if it's still on the OPs road.....

If it is given anything other than a CAT N or possibly S then you won't be able to get it back anyway, it has to go to an approved vehicle recycling center. Times have changed

Like I said I got to keep my 330i for 22% of the insurers valuation. Most insurers have a contract with their salvage buyers that defines what percentage of the settlement the salvage buyer has to pay, hence the precise 22%.

And because of that it won't be negotiable, so if you might want it you need to ask them!

Cat N or Cat S can both go back on the road, but a lot of insurers want to see a new MOT on a Cat S because it's categorised as having Structural damage, whereas Cat N unsurprisingly has Non-Structural damage.

4 or 5 years ago my nephew kept his Cat S 325i Touring but his insurer wanted to see an MOT pass after the repair before they would continue cover.

You really need to get your finger out and make a call. thumbup

In before that guy posts a picture of the back bumper of his BMW with the tiniest mark on it and telling everyone it was written off because of that…
