Hi all, long time member, very infrequent poster ..

Have a 992 Carrera S .. love it. As has been written many times, it's very subtle in the noise department, despite having a so-called sports exhaust in the form of PSE. In reality, you might get a bit more burble at idle but in all likelihood most of the extra noise is because they also open the sound symposers too.

I know there are aftermarket exhausts costing £thousands. And I know you can buy a box with some remote controls which open the flaps and give you more noise. If you're in the UK I priced this up at £700. I know you can also get a tune which will do the same thing but #warranty ...

It's the flaps in the exhaust .. they just need to stay open! I know you can't just disconnect the wires (cue Christmas on your dashboard) but if you could buy something you just plugged in for less than £100 that opened the flaps permanently, who'd buy it? I think I would! Let me know and I'll see what I can do ..

The simplest solution is to use a shaft collar on the actuating rod. It only uses vacuum pressure to operate so you aren't going to do any harm by holding it open.

Whilst semi-permanent, this method also allows some adjustment so you can have the valves partially open if you prefer.

One for each side of the exhaust

You can do it through the PIWIS, if you can get a friendly user (I.e. probably not an OPC). Have a look on Rennlist.

It's probably vacuum tubes like most modern cars with exhaust flaps. So, assuming that pulling out a fuse (à la DB9 and Vantage) is not a good idea because Christmas tree dashboard, then you could either:

1) clamp the tubes (a bit like a urologist might so you don't make women pregnant biggrin ) - this works for XK8s, Ferrari Californias, Lamborghini Gallardos and Golf R32s so it might work for your car. smile Try this: https://amzn.to/3UTyaZA
2) disconnect the tubes at the exhaust end. If you go down this route, you'll have dangling tubes that you'll need to tie off somewhere with cable ties. Also, you'll need to block off the tubes with golf tees or similar. This also works for Californias and early Gallardos, and doesn't cause lights to pop up on the dashboard. This kind of idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58kWDMS-D2w

I'm a font of useless knowledge as I have too much time on my hands so end up watching random car vids on YT!

Also, I see you're in Surrey, too. I would love to hear a before and after in person. Might be interested in even having an explore underneath your car if you fancy doing the work yourself.

I need to grow up because my filthy mind immediately turned your first sentence into smut as I was reading it.

It doesn't help that the product itself does indeed look like a collar for your personal rod. I'll leave you to hit google yourself!

sadly not a vacuum flap .. and stop the sniggering ;-) .. it's a motor right at the back of the exhaust. PIWIS is an option I guess but perhaps a bit harder to revert than DIY - as you say, would need a friendly indie nearby with the latest s/w.

So it's an electronic one? No tube connecting to the flap mechanism? Are you 100% sure? The Capristo upgrade for a 992 is run off a vacuum (from a quick Google).

Yeah, definitely wiring to the flap where there's a motor. See here for their 'valve controller' for 992 ($650) - they say 'electronic to electronic'.

I was wondering this the other day. I had a db9. Remove the fuse. Done.

I had a carrera and a turbo s with sports exhaust

The turbo s is better but frankly could still be more throaty.

That's annoying. I found this: https://jfautomotive.co.uk/product/armytrix-exhaus...

I'd probably see if I can get an aftermarket exhaust system and someone who can swap it out cheaply/quickly if you need to take the car in to Porsche. Or get a Gundo-hack done to bypass the box/valve on a spare OEM system and swap it out when you need to take it in. biggrin

I was going to go down the exhaust valve controller route for my 992 C2S.
They are ridiculously expensive for what they are though at £650. The one for my F82 M4 that did the same thing was £250!
Just having flaps open wouldn’t really appeal as I don’t want it stupid loud for cold starts.

I think I have a solution for 'permanently open'. Easy to fit - can do it without jacking the car up or removing engine cover - no dashboard lights, no issues so far.

Certainly louder on cold start - more crackles in all drive modes - more 'fruity'. But I wouldn't say it is any noisier than cars I've had previously - M3/M5 spring to mind. Not particularly loud at speed - almost feels like how Porsche might have designed it to sound with PSE before the regulatory department got involved ..

We're off on a little European jaunt next week and I plan to leave this in place to see how it behaves. Have an idea how it could be made switchable too, and even variable .. but that'll have to wait till I'm back :-D

I just put fabspeed back boxes on a 997 many years ago, sounded epic afterwards.

992 factory sports exhaust on my car just makes a flatulent noise a bit louder

I think the turbos do that. Seems to be the same for any flat 6 turbo unless you remove the cat and silencer!?

Ok, what have you done? Can we have a listen?

Well i'm definitely no youtuber (thank goodness) but I coerced my son to take some videos and I stitched them together. Cold start, warm start, launch, drive by, etc.

Well done!

So what did you do exactly? For me that would be just right. Not crazy loud but not quiet.

Sorry for the delay - we went off for a few days and 1000 miles in Europe with a couple of prototypes installed. It worked really well! I guess it depends on what sort of driving you do and what sort of noise you like but I'm not planning on removing them! So I thought I'd offer them for sale if anyone is interested - see 992noise.com.

£34 sounds like a bargain for the improvement in sound. If I had a 992 I'd buy one. (I'll overlook the fact that this whole thread seems like you're setting this up as some kind of marketing exercise. wink )

Haha - you're right - it does look hugely like that!! Promise it isn't - will keep quiet now just incase it makes it worse! Was a genuine attempt at sharing what I was doing - kinda hoped that someone else had done this, actually, and could save me buying the stuff and doing all the electricals.
