Quite fancy going somewhere a bit more obscure this summer, and the back-country of West Virginia/Kentucky appeals in a chilled out, relaxed kinda way. My youtube algorithm has delivered me quite a few videos, especially Peter Santenello's tours around the hills of West Virginia. Obviously there are good and bad areas to consider but it does look beautiful for the most part. Has anyone been/any experiences?

I'm thinking maybe a few days in Charlotte, NC either side, with a few days spent up in West Virginia; looks like a 3 hour drive north from Charlotte to get into the foothills. I know in terms of landmarks etc there isn't much in that neck of the woods, like I say I'm just interested to check out some back country and chill out.

There is, of course, the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway roads that follow the hills from Virginia, into NC - with plenty of adjacent National Parks and other touristy things.

If you get a chance, stay at the Peaks of Otter Lodge on the Blue Ridge Parkway
