Newcastle hotel

Can anyone recommend me a hotel with a really good Tyne view, preferably with a Balcony (I know I would be stretching the budget with the latter, so view more important).

It would be for over the weekend, ‘classy’ and up to £300 a night. Budget stretchable for something special (and no, I haven’t just pulled, I haven’t had an affair, we just need some proper relaxation away from a house project).

The only Riverside town centre hotels I can think of are the Mal Maison and the Copthorne. You would need to check their individual Web sites for rates and rooms overlooking the river.
Both are on the quayside and within a short walk to the bars, restaurants etc

The Vermont or The Malmaison have some nice river view suites, but none with balconies AFAIK. Vermont the better hotel, Malmaison the better location for the quayside. The Copthorne is a bit out of the way, and the Hilton the wrong side of the river.

Hilton on the Gateshead side. May get a balcony overlooking the river and bridge if you specify

Or try Melia. Nice rooms, amazing comfy beds and normally a decent view.

I would imagine a bit of change in your budget too

Copthorne is definitely one to avoid.

Mal Maison probably best option, or for something different check out Hotel du Vin, you could get a good suite with a river view

Agree. Copthorne gone downhill significantly in recent years. The Malmaision is a great hotel in my opinion the Hotel Du vin is even better. No balcony but a partial river view and a short walk to the quayside.

The Hilton on Gateshead has good views of the Tyne bridge if that’s what you want. And it’s a reasonable hotel.

I agree the Hotel Du Vin is better than the Malmaison. However, there was very little parking when I stayed, whereas the Malmaison let you use designated spaces in the multi-storey. The Hilton will have good views if you can get the right room.

Bit off topic but stayed at Motel One twice in the past twelve months which was right opposite a place called You Only Live Once (Yolo).

Quite an eye-opener.

That's a very valid point. You can park further down from the hotel but that's not ideal. Worth noting that the hotel may tell you that its ok to park in the gym car park next to the hotel. Its not! We were there Christmas day and the gym have installed a camera and we received a parking notification charge.

Thanks yes, I went to a conference there once and thought the views were spectacular, so maybe booking by phone rather than online would be worth it to emphasise it’s all about the view and get a decent view.

I have mixed experiences with Malmaison, loved the Edinburgh one, hated the Liverpool one, and it tends to attract orange shrieking hordes at the weekends (sorry for being snobby, just want as relative peace and quiet as you can get in Newcastle at the weekend), so Hilton may well be the best option for us.

We did actually go in there on a week night back in November as we had to stay there due to our Edinburgh train being cancelled.
It wasn't as full on as it was back in April but there were still plenty of virtually half naked middle aged women out and about.

The Melia is a nice hotel, we stay there at least once a year.

We had a suite at the Hotel du Vin and you could view the Tyne bridge while soaking in the tub! - They have a nice cigar smoking hut as well

We stayed at The Grey Street Hotel last year, fine but I don’t think the views were what you want.

View from Vermont. Think this was 11th floor of 12.

Free parking is a bonus and if you have anything interesting they will park it outside front, as opposed to their car park just outside the gates.
