Reading the excellent Mint of Vixpy thread and its references to various clothing brands reminded me of an experience I had a few months back (which I had been waiting for over five years):

I was out of town, and it being warm and sunny, I donned my casual garb and headed for the nearest purveyor of beer. "Casual" to me was a loud (real) hawiian shirt, jeans and all-terrain sandles (without socks of course).

At the doors I was greeted by a gorilla wearing a white shirt and dark tie (amongst other things) who told me "Sorry "Dad" you can't come in, you're not smart enough."

I'd had the reply ready for five years - "Look mate, I'm a f:censored:ng professor - how smart do you have to be?"

None of the professors I work with give a shit about their title or social status.

Me neither - wouldn't dream of it.

I think you miss the point - it was supposed to be a play on the word "smart"? (As in how well you are dressed vs how clever are you?)

I always thought smart casual was having trouser creases ironed in your jeans ...

Doorman certainly do have some weird ideas about "SC" - my mate turned away from a local bar for wearing trainers - with a smart suit. (Bad taste possibly, but the sign on the door didn't ban that!)

Interesting - I have some professional academic interests in those areas myself.

I might email you in the next couple of days if that is ok, as you may be interested in some research I am embarking on.

Me too..

Must remember to use that line myself when I get refused entry to a bar in town on the basis of not being the sort of perseon the door bitches want in the place..

OK, so I'll have to lie about the professor bit though..

That's the bizzarest and silliest thing I've ever heard of. Truely ridiculus.

Must say Professor David Begg and Oliver Carsten have kind of degraded the title as they are both thick as a pile of lavatory seats.
