Hi all,
I'm looking for a wide-angle for my D70. Narrowed the choice down to:
- Sigma 12-24 - this is a full-frame WA (the rest are digital/APS size sensor only), somewhat more expensive but apparently very good.
- Sigma 10-20 - Very new, very wide, but some samples seem to have softness problems
- Tamron 11-18 - Know little about this one
- Tokina 12-24 - Again very good, apparently comparable to the Nikkor 12-24 (way to expensive for me), constant f4. Not so easy to find though.

Any of the CLUD members use any of these, and if so, what experiences?

Thanks,
Maarten

You need to try them all if you can, and buy the one you can afford. I dont have a WA lens just an 18-70 kit lens. The others are 50mm prime and an 80-400 VR

Faced with the prospect of buying a such a lens for a trip to NZ, I decided that if I come across a really stunning vista, I'll take two shots with the 18-70 (and camera on manual exposure) and stitch them later in PS - saving £400

Decided to go with the Sigma. Dithered between that and the Tokina (really well made and solid and maybe a trifle sharper, and less warm rendition than the Sigma - BUT my sample had serious CA and the 2 mm while not much can make a difference in certain situations). A BIG difference with the 18-70 (or in my case 18-50). The wide-angle distortion gives your pictures a really different perspective from stitched pictures... whether desirable or not, it does give nice creative and not so creative possibilities...

Anyway, parted with the cash now and lens lust seems to have subsided for now. - 10-20, 18-50, 80-400, 90 macro and 50 1.4 (and a 70-300 to be put up for sale), I hope this will keep me busy for a while. If anyone's interested I can post some samples once I put it to good use.

Thanks for the reactions!
Maarten

The CLUD is the section of the PH Photgraphy forum that is inhabited by "D" Nikon owners. We (CLUD members) out number the Dark Sdie (Canon owners) significantly. ERGO the reason they - The Dark Sdie - try to coerse new DSLR buyers to buy Canons. Admittedly the Dark Sdie do succeed in turning the odd poor soul but the majority resist - The CLUD has at least 41 members - and swell our ranks. Clud members also get a Stiffy Cat. We - The CLUD - did design a Stiffy Cat for the Dark Sdie but they are unable to organise its distribution - I even offered 10 sheets of Parchment to them so they could print the Stiffy Cats for their members and have a few spare copies.
