Hi, I have got bmw 5 series 63 plate with 161k miles. Yesterday I got car engine oil and filter changed and soon after that, car starting making noise from engine. I took it to few garages today and they all saying timing chain needs replacing. I'm struggling to understand there was no noise or problem like this before yesterday before car was serviced. What really happened within an hour? Is it actually a timing chain or can be something else ? Any advice or comments ? Can I save the the huge amount of money and avoid changing the whole timing chain? Many thanks

Which engine (2.0D N47 / 3.0D N57)?

Unfortunately this can happen; it's known to happen when restarting the car after a simple run (ie putting fuel into it etc)

Deffo get a 2nd opinion; but with higher miles it can be more of a risk

Get a second opinion ASAP if it does go it’s a new engine.

I've done loads of chains on these engines - if you even suspect it may be, then it needs doing.

Sounds like one of the guides may have potentially broken.
