I’ve seen a used C class. Having done a free car search, the car has lost 13k during an MOT, see below:

4 Sept 23 - 21.9k at MOT pass
3 Oct 23 - 34.7k and MOT fail
31 Oct 23 - 22.3k and MOT pass

The dealer is saying the 3 Oct entey was wrong and units entered were in km and not miles as it should have been. Any thoughts?

I’d be asking why it’s had so many mots so close together.

34,730 km is 21,580 miles, which is less than the previous MOT mileage, so still an oddity..

Although how it can have done almost 15,000 miles in less than a month is debateble.

I'd be walking away unless there's a more plausible reason. Having said that my car had a mileage discrepancy flagged up, MOT tester had clearly put the last three digits of the VIN as the last three of the mileage.

Also how you go from good tyres to two advisories on tyres worn close to legal limit within a few hundred miles, plus even at 21,956, conversion to km is 35,129, not 34,730. Assuming it must've moved a bit to go up to 22,315 miles on 31st, it should be above the 35,000 threshold.

It could be that whoever did the test totally screwed up the mileage, it does happen, but the whole thing does look very odd indeed.

The mileage between the September MOT pass and the October MOT fail is a big step up. But it works out as 427 miles a day and is feasible for a long distance taxi. It would also explain how a car goes from passing to failing an MOT in a month, and why there are so many MOTs.

The argument about km is almost right but not exactly, 34799km (the highest number which would be described as 34.7k km) is 21623 miles, which is still less than the 21.9k miles recorded in September.

If the dealer have clocked the car, they've done it in a pretty stupid way, but that's not impossible.....

For an ordinary car, unless its very cheap I'd walk away simply to avoid future hassle when selling it.

This is what I’m told:

4th of September, the MOT was carried out by the previous owner and it was passed. 21,956 miles on the clock.

2nd of October, they carried out the MOT again and it was failed with tyre pressure issue. At that time they recorder 34,730 miles by error, which was originally Kilometers.
2nd of October, they carried out another MOT after fixing the tyre pressure issue and the mileage remained the same error one.

31st of October, we have carried out MOT as the mileage was recorded wrong and changed it to miles, which was 22,315.

Poor condition inside and out, dodgy mileage history, run of the mill car with nothing rare about it, not entirely sure why anyone would buy this unless it was massively under market value, even then I wouldn't bother, it'll only be hassle when you come to sell it in the future.

Whether it's a mistake, or not, it'll show as having a mileage discrepancy on Hpi.

So when you go to sell it, nearly all dealers will say "sorry, not for me"

Overspray on the plastic inside the filler neck if it bothers you that it's had paint.

It doesn't leap out as anything special and there are plenty of C Class around for sale.

As said previously, you'll have similar problems when you come to sell it on in the future...
What does the Service records say re mileage / dates etc.?

Walk away and leave it
