changing over to cherished plate info?
Discussion
Do it online. Mot is online now as well so don't usually get a replacement cert. You will need to wait for the V5 with the new reg on it before places will accept it and print you new plates. Once you get the V5 phone the insurance company to change the policy to the new plate. Done.

Just bear in mind the online transfer is virtually instantaneous, so make sure you have your plates ready to fit before you next drive.

What's the answer then?InitialDave said:

So you can get plates made with a retention document, before the number has been assigned to the car? That would work better as you could have the plates ready to put on the car as soon as you've processed the transfer and updated your insurance.
Yes , that's what I did.Dog Star said:
Or do what I do and just get them in advance by mail order from any number of places in the Channel Islands, NI, Scotland that don’t have this ludicrous V5 and ID requirement. If specified they come correctly marked with postcode, BS etc.
Ah, I wanted mine specifically with the local main dealer's details on them, but otherwise, yes, I'd happily sidestep the nonsense and order online from someone who doesn't have to do it.MitchT said:

Someone mentioned to me the other day that, in theory, it is possible for someone making up plates from a retention certificate to make a note of the document reference number and then simply use it to apply the plate to a vehicle using the online portal thingy. It would seem prudent to keep the Retention Certificate in-hand at all times if going in person to get plates made up off a Retention Certificate, and to blank out all the various reference numbers if sending a picture/scan of it to an online plate manufacturer!

Yes that is definitely possible. It would seem prudent to keep the Retention Certificate in-hand at all times if going in person to get plates made up off a Retention Certificate, and to blank out all the various reference numbers if sending a picture/scan of it to an online plate manufacturer!
You just need the V5C and the ref number on the cert and you can switch over.
I just got some new plates knocked up by one of the "show plates" suppliers on eBay before doing the official switchover (they didn't ask for a retention certificate). They have the official BS thing etc on them.
My car is parked on the street and the switchover to new reg number is instantaneous on the DVLA portal, so I need to immediately switch physical plates, insurance and parking permit to stay insured and not get a parking ticket!

If the vehicle details are changed on the DVLA systems at the point of issuing the new V5C after assignment of the plate, but the post then takes a week to deliver the new V5C to the owner, surely the owner would be driving around for the week in an untaxed vehicle with a plate that doesn't exist on the DVLA/Police ANPR system, with no paperwork to show the Police (if stopped) that they are awaiting a plate transfer because both the original V5C and the V778 Retention Certificate were sent to DVLA during the Assignment process and have not yet been returned with the new V5C??
