Baby due in 2 weeks, and i am looking at a Ducati 749.

Phoned wife just before i put the deposit donw and get a resounding no...

Arrrrr previous bike was a vfr800 and in the summer i was going to buy a Buell but backed out. Wife dosn't have a problme with me getting another bike. She just want's me to wait a year or two.

I think she is scared i will be out on the bike too much and not spending time with her and the baby.

Any sugestions, or am i being a bit selfish?

Bit selfish maybe... Don't forget, she'll be awash with hormones right now and *may* be nervous about becoming a single mum

Perhaps worth waiting till the spring.

I bought my bike about a year before our first child was born, she is 6 month old now but the wife has always been of the opinion that "it your money do want you want". As long as the bills are paid, wife and baby are fed and watered she is cool. I have even thought about upgrading but can't justify the expence, i have not done many miles this year.

You could always say that at least it is not a 999!!

Personally I would leave it.

It's nearly winter now anyway, enjoy your new baby and reconsider next spring........

So good advice, my main reason to buy now is there are a load of good deal about as we are approching the off season.

The bike would probably only do 500miles between now and next spring anyway.

I cant really see me winning this one. The annoying thing is its usually becaue of money, but not this time.

Women eh Cant live with them can shoot them, and to top it all off just had the nebour round complanining about the new Linn HiFi.......

So looks like i need a detached house too!!!!

Bike prices are seasonal and you will be in a better position to buy come winter. Spring time is a sellers market and bargains are few and far between.

This would be my approach too - my missus said i'd be a single man if I bought a bike as she hates the things with a passion. I turned up home one evening with a Bandit 600 and a 'look what I bought' grin on my face. That was last Feb, and she's still here

Me: "Hey, look what I've just bought....!"

Wife: "Hey, .... I'm pregnant!"

ME: "Oh!"

....and I still had time to trade the 600 in for my current 1200. On the other hand, I've never since had the money to change it again!

Might be wise holding off for now....?

If this is your first child she is probably stunned that you're thinking about anything else in all honesty. I'd drop it personally and pick it up next spring, you'll be busy enough and tired enough as it is.

Thanks everyone, wise words and i think i would be wise to drop it till spring.

I had a a good look in the babies new room, in the wardrob with all the tiny cloths, kind of puts it into perspective.

I think a good kick up the @rse was required, attention should be firmly on her and the baby.

Thanks everyone.

This all sounds familiar..

5 Years ago: I had just got off the phone to a dealer sorting a deal on a new TLR1000. My wife (who was in the bathroom) then called down to me saying she had just done a pregnancy test. Guess what..preggers! Bloody timing was unbelievable. I then phoned the dealer and cancelled my bike...sigh.

Whilst I agree with being a responsible father (My 16yr old hasn't seen his since he was 3!!), I do also believe that you need to follow your own interests.... otherwise you can become bored with each others (and your own) company....

There's always compromise - the roads *are* bloody dangerous places and not getting any better - I've just sold Kitty Blade *boo hoo* but will not be giving up on track riding. I'd also never ask Dave to stop riding unless he came to that conclusion himself... you could always get a track bike... go to trackdays with a trailer and even take your wife & youngsters with you in the car... less expensive than a brand new road bike too - no tax or insurance either!
Good luck - with the biking AND the new arrival.

I wasn't suggesting the two aren't compatible, I managed it... just that with two weeks to go isn't the best time to mention a new bike purchase given that the big event will be foremost by a country miles in the lady's mind and she will (in all probability) expect it to be prominant in his mind too. Things settle down soon enough though.

Mark
