Hi guys, I just bought a new car today and the dealer explained he had to transfer the car into trade before transferring registration to me, because he'd only got the car in the other day.

He told me I could get the car taxed by calling DVLA and giving them the VIN number.

I called them and gave my details for them to check against the vehicle. They confirmed transferral of ownership did take place today but my details don't match what they have on file.

This checks out with what the dealer said about transferring into trade but DVLA have told me I can't tax it at the mo.

Errm, what am I supposed to do now??

Tax it with the reference number of the new keeper slip part of the last V5. You have that option on the DVLA "tax my car" page.

If the dealer kept the v5 you're screwed.

It didn't let me:

Unable to use service
Unfortunately you cannot use this service as the V5C/2 reference number you have used is invalid.

Going to call DVLA back and hope for the best...

Why? It doesn't represent ownership.

Screwed because you can't tax it until you get the V5 I meant, not properly screwed.

Post Office might be able to do it for you as someone said, I always forget about them.
