Anyone remember in the 90s when people used to be able to start their car from the key fob?

I had the system on one of my cars, Clifford Intellistart.

I've not seen any mention of it for years and it used to be one of those things you had on cars with a top spec alarm systems.

Not seen sight nor sound of that sort of technology and it never got adopted into mainstream either (like starter buttons did).

It's a common feature on modern cars now. For example here is the current Bmw x1 (in vertical edition):

Thought it was ilegal to leave a car running with no one in charge?? hence they stopped doing this.

Expect EV as they are always ready to go smile

The Volvo app for my XC60 allows you to remote start for 15 minutes.

Unless the legislation has chaged it is illegal: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regu...

However, you could still do it on private propery, such as your driveway.

I'm also surprised that it woud be allowed with respect to emmisions regulations.
Afterall, leaving the engine running just to warm or cool the interior isn't really environmentally freindly is it?

As mentioned above, the Volvo one is great. Especially when you have a toddler and are out and about in cold weather only to come back to a toasty warm car, lovely!

Had it on a 2015 Mustang hire car in Florida. As well as starting the car it put the aircon on full cold and may have started the arse-coolers in the front seats.

Most Jaguar cars have been able to be started from the app for about the last 7 or 8 years. Allows the car to be nicely warmed up before you leave.

Wonder how it compares with chucking a load of glycol all over the floor?

There is nothing in the manual about only starting the car on private land:

Is that USA though... potentially not legal in the UK - maybe that's the answer?

Well I'm most certainly in the UK and do this quite often in the winter. Always on my own private driveway though.

I'm in the UK and my (petrol engined) Volvo has it.

If the outside temperature is below a certain point it also switches on the heated front and rear screens, seat and steering wheel. Great when you live high up in the Pennines like I do.

In the summer if the outside temperature is above a certain point it switches the air con on to cool the car. (I've never used this bit. biggrin )

Looking at that it could be argued that you had a purpose for leaving the vehicle running, it was not a danger to anybody. Parking brake engaged. Should be okay.

Unless I'm reading it wrong that also says you have to leave it with the handbrake on?

I have it on a 2023 bottom of the range Toyota Corolla hybrid.

You start it from your mobile phone, you can choose what temperature you want and also if you want front and rear defrosting too.

I use it parked on a drive, I don't think you are allowed to use it parked on the road or in an open air carpark.

The car is immobilised and the alarm is on even when it's running. Should someone break in the engine stops anyway.

I'd imagine it doesn't tell you not to run people over, either. Doesn't mean you can or should. :rules:

I know it was a cool feature but really it was made for warming or cooling the car before driving so it’s no going to be needed anymore with electric connected cars.

I imagine we don’t have it as it’s not legal to keep a car running unattended although in the states it’s quite common as it’s allowed there I think.

Is that why uk cars don’t have webasto heaters too?

Our new Volvo just like the last one, has remote start, no comment about private land etc, You can start the car from anywhere in the world to warm/cool the car etc
