New Brabus S-Class gets 930hp, does 50mpg
The Brabus hybrid onslaught continues apace, now with another 130hp for the mightiest S-Class
It would seem that some things are indeed sacred when it comes to Brabus. Having recently revealed its most powerful creation ever, the Rocket 1000 based on the plug-in AMG GT 4-door, the temptation must have been to go even wilder still with the S-Class using the same powertrain - the 63 E Performance. But nothing on planet Brabus goes faster than a Rocket, so the Sonderklasse equivalent must make do with a meeker state of tune. So just the 930hp then.
Perhaps what’s most astonishing is that the Brabus 930’s power output isn’t all that far from the standard version - Mercedes really will sell you an 802hp S-Class from the showroom. That being said, the 128hp gain represents an uplift of more than 15 per cent, and that’d be noticeable whatever the standard output. It’s been achieved with a pair of burly Brabus blowers for the 4.0-litre V8 (this E Performance build goes without the additional capacity); replacing the AMG turbos has lifted engine power from 612hp to 740hp. As with the Rocket, the electric drive unit has been left alone, contributing the same 190hp. Brabus says that ‘extensive tests on stationary engine test benches and state-of-the-art AWD chassis dynamometers as well as complex test drives on racetracks, test tracks and public roads were conducted for calibration purposes.’
The result is a 2.6-tonne behemoth capable of accelerating as fast as a McLaren F1 (and with a three-year Brabus warranty) - 0-62mph takes 3.2 seconds. The top speed is limited to 180mph, presumably for the sake of the tyres. Or perhaps the poor road it’s travelling down at three miles a minute. Anyone who witnesses a 930 storming past will be treated to a ‘particularly powerful Brabus V8 exhaust note’ thanks to quad carbon-titanium tailpipes. But this is 2024 Brabus, so there’s a ‘Coming Home’ mode also.
As seemingly every AMG S-Class ever made is black, Brabus has had to go the extra kilometre to make the 930 stand out. So the intakes at the front are larger (and functional), there’s a rear diffuser made of carbon (of course) and the wheels are a new 20-spoke Monoblock design. Make sure the hotel valet knows they’re special - and that they’re 22-inch diameter. And that, yes, it’s 10mm lower thanks to Brabus’s air suspension module, so it really does look that good.
Not that they’ll be listening, of course, because they’ll be in the interior of a 930 and probably not able to hear you. Naturally, the buyer can do as they wish with their driving environment, though Brabus will likely insist on the ‘77’ logos seen on recent cars (denoting the year the company was founded). And probably some more carbon.
Owners of the new S63 can have their car Brabus’d to whatever level they wish, be it just wheels or wheels or body kit - or the whole 930 conversion. Without UK prices just yet, it isn’t clear how much more the €405,000 (£346,000) asked for the car seen here is over standard, but this is Brabus, so it’s hardly going to be a modest premium. Still, it is a 900hp Mercedes S-Class - or for those who can make do with just the 700hp, look what’s lurking in the classifieds…
Sorry but to me it’s horrific, no class and the image of a gangsta / road man, innit?
Yeah, mahoosive horsepower but can’t use it anywhere for more than a few seconds without triggering speed cameras, running up the atse of the car that 6 seconds ago was half a mile in front, or falling off the road due to the pilots lack of talent.
If I was after a fast barge, and accepting that this is now a few years old, I reckon I could happily make do with a previous generation V12 S65L instead.
