Hi - anyone had experience with not being able to remove a VVT solenoid? What did you try? If it wasn't successful, what happened?

My son's 2009 Audi A3 has spent 10 days at an Audi garage after EML came on - code P0011 (camshaft timing sensor A over advanced). Garage was "unable to complete" their diagnostic tests because they couldn't remove the P0011. They broke two specialist tools (the first one and then the second one they ordered to replace it) trying.

They blame the previous mechanic (different garage) who last year (when the car belonged to previous owner) fitted new timing chain kit and headgasket.

Their conclusion was that the likely cause of the P0011 was poor fitting/engine reassembly, and that the only option is to strip and rebuild the engine at a cost of £4k (more than the car is worth).

This outcome obviously it was *not* what my son was hoping to hear. It may well be correct (the garage is well-rated) but because they weren't able to fully investigate it leaves me with questions - I don't want to blindly skip straight to worse case scenario.

Any alternative suggestions and/or workarounds for the stuck VVT?
