I've just bought my 96 C2 having swapped from a 03 Bosxter S. I love the car and have it booked into Ninemeister for a winter check (serviced 12M and 1400 miles ago)and a few little bits and pieces.

Now I'm getting used to the car, a few early observations;
-Steering seems very heavy even though it's only wearing the standard 17 in cups. I thought these were power steered and was expecting less of a 'work out' when I park.
-Brakes. No where near as re-assuring as the Bosxters. Seem very spongey and you have to really stand on them. Porscheworx checked them out before I bought the car and commented that the pads & discs were fine. Is this just 9 year old technology at work or should I expect better?
If that is the case, has anyone upgraded their brakes on their 993 and with what result?

Finally, can anyone recommend any 'modest' upgrades for a 993 for a little more power and possibly a little more noise?!

Thanks guys,
lee

Check tyre pressures and get Colin to change the brake fluid.

Drill some holes in the airbox = more noise

Only drove a Boxster once cos i have trouble with my height and cannot remember how the controls feel.

However the 993 steering is not that heavy and should not notice it parking, i think it is heavy ish when moving.

Same with the brakes, i thought them were great only problem is ABS cutting in when fronts are unevenly loaded. You may have harder pads fitted which can feel dead until warmed up, see if it improves after a good thrashing

Hi Lee,

Steering shouldn't feel heavy - mine certainly isn't, either manoeuvring or on the road. I've always thought my wife's Honda Civic had very light steering, but the Porsche isn't significantly heavier at the wheel. The brakes also work well - almost too well if you've got someone on your tail! Get the brakes serviced, tyre pressures checked and have them look at your steering rack while they're about it.

I had a long natter with a mechanic from Parr, who did the work on my 993 C2 (and they race too, so they know what they're doing), and we talked about power upgrades. His view was that Porsche had pretty much wrung all the horsepower out of the existing hardware as standard.

I'm no expert, but I gather from those who do that you might get a handful more horsepower out of it but it'll cost quite a bit and you'll probably barely notice it...

As long as everything is in good condition the brakes should be acceptable..If you want to improve things you could fit Big reds (bigger calipers) and larger discs from a Turbo. Be careful with this as you will have an astonishing braking system and those following may not stop in time!

With respect to noise, some fit RSR exhaust boxes (do a search on this forum)they are fine unless you come up against strict trackday noise testers.

As stated on power increases not too much to do without spending much, I know of a very quick C2 with over 300bhp that 9M did a remap on, that is probably the best way to go.
A 3.8 conversion costs too much for relatively little gain on a 3.6 in comparison to a decent engine map.

brakes should be great, if you're getting even disc/pad wear then you probably need fresh fluid and a good bleed.

noise - agree with previous, get RSR exhausts boxes from www.carnewal.com (see www.p-car.com for more info about these) and either get a motorsound airbox (about £80) or drill your existing airbox to make it perform the same as a motorsound one

congrats on a nice car by the way!

Thanks chaps, very helpful as ever.
The RSR sport boxes sound very interesting!
I just took the car out for a blast, no reason in particular he he (never did that with the Boxster) and It does fly! Maybe I'll hold fire on that power upgrade and just get a little more noise.

As for the brakes, well still a little disappointed but I'm sure Ninemeister will get to the bottom of it. I suspect there is something a little amiss such as brake fluid.

I'm now on the search for some alloys with a bit more presence. Most 993's seem to have turbo's or the split rims on the targa's. Anyone got anything else that really sets the car off?
Thanks again.

rather than supersizes the brakes........

add extra cooling, which will extend their effectivness.... and make sure those holes in the drilled discs are clear of brake dust, or they get clogged up and heat up !

Uprate the suspension with Bilstein HD's and H&R springs. The brakes sound as if they need looked at.

RSR is still a little tame,I had them on my last 993, the Fabspeed Maxflo gives a wonderful low rumble at tickover and as the revs rise, the sound gets better and the smile broadens.

If you are looking for more power recommend a remap by Colin, I got an extra 30 bhp from mine when he did it.

I've just collected my new 993 C2, and my brakes are nothing like you describe. If anything they are like standing on a brick - the pedal hardly moves at all but it stops extremely well.

My problem is the bl**dy squeaky windscreen.

Yes, the brakes should be more than adequate and not spongy. My screen squeak reduced a bit with a strut brace, but sometime I'll get the tape put in.

Yes, I'm planning to get a strut brace and see if that helps, but which one ...?

I like the look of this one (as after all looks are what matter here ... ):

but its out of stock and no info as to when it might be available again.

What kind of extra insurance did you have to pay with that upgrade?

Silver993tt,

If you are talking about the remappiong, it was on my last 993, but there was not a lot added, if anything.
