Hi, this has probably been asked a thousand times but had a quick search through the last 8 pages or so and couldn't see anything.

A family member has a watch they are contemplating selling and has asked for advice.
Neither of us know anything about watches so we just want to make sure he doesn't do anything wrong if he does decide to sell it.
The watch has been owned from new, is boxed and has the original receipt for when it was purchased.
Having never done this before it seems like he has various options but we don't know which would be the best way forward:

1) Take it back to the shop where it was purchased and ask if they would consider buying it back?
2) Specialist online watch seller, like watchcollecting/watchfinder etc
3) Generic online auction site like ebay
4) Local pawn shop.

In my head they are in order of sensibleness, but maybe there are other ways?

Any advice appreciated please.

It’s mainly going to be based on what it is and what they want for it. There’s a for sale thread on here, start there with more info and a guide price they’d be happy with and you’ll get a feel for whether expectations are in the right area:

Is it a Timex or a Rolex? It makes a difference to the saleability

As per the others, what watch it is makes the world of difference to how to sell it.

What is the watch? As has been said whether it's a Rolex/Patek etc.. or Casio and anything in-between will change the answers/options.

There is a watch for sale thread on here and the watches do sell, I've sold on there, I've also sold on collecting watches as well, those two are good options to maximise the amount you get back.

Hi, It's a rolex.
Details, details. Which model? Steel or gold? Bought in the last 5 years or 50 years ago?

An old Rolex of the right model could be worth a fair packet, but an unpopular one bought recently and they'll probably be disappointed in the offers.

Have a look on Chrono24, find something similar, take 25-30% off that price and you'll probably be in the right ballpark.

Just done this for a friend.

Got understanding of fair value from this forum and sold watches from watchcollecting (largely ignored advertised prices).

Went to local high street dealer, got two values from them; cash purchase and commission sale, the later will nett an extra £1k (20%) but take longer and more risk involved.

Several members have had deals (buying & selling) with Dom Hackett (Dom H) who is a forum member.

If your friend is near Chester or Liverpool then Miltons are very reputable:

Expect to be kick in the goolies by dealers at the moment. I’ve had some terrible offers for a couple of good watches lately.

I sold an expensive Tudor on Ebay recently.
Used the authenticator for protection both ways:-
https://pages.ebay.co.uk/authenticity-guarantee-wa...
A great service.
I also sold it on an 80% off fees offer, although I do have a zero fees offer now!

Some idiots still offered cash or bank transfer etc. What kind of retard would do that, bypassing the free authenticator !!
