I’m thinking both objectively and subjectively.

Subjectively, I think I’ve probably become a bit despondent about the way we’re going. I feel like there’s going to be a tipping point whereby the sensible, productive few simply won’t be able to fund the growing horde of people who just lack capacity in any sense to run normal life.

It really feels on an anecdotal sense that the sensible people aren’t really procreating much, and those that are are the third or fourth-generation troubled families who have several children, all with issues and needs, and so it grows and grows.

On a subjective level, it just seems that people in general are incapable of sensible thought, I have such a low bar with general public interactions that when you encounter/see sparky people it’s a pleasant surprise.

Don’t get me started on the standard of critical thought which goes into driving.

Objectively, is intelligence and common sense actually diminishing or am I just being grumpy?

No. You are correct.

Social media, the 'career choice' of being a feckless layabout and the lack of respect generally are all a malaise that is getting worse.

People have been saying that it's all going downhill for centuries.

To be fair, when you hear of five year olds starting school still wearing nappies and leaving school at 16 unable to read and do basic arithmetic, it dies beg the question exactly when and where it went so wrong.

Very much this, the world is very different to when i was young, mid 50,s now.
seems to be alot of more stupid and lazy people, but thats one view.
Its a changing world, if thats good or bad is debatable, but in 30 odd years or less i wont really care.

That said, my 4 year old started school recently- reading all sorts of things correctly and writing simples sentences, feels a lot earlier than when I were a lad

There are also nappy wearers in her large class

I blame the sixties (decade, not age).

Well, I’ll tell you one indicator.

Maybe as recently as 15 years ago, if you’d have turned up at your local supermarket or school run in your slippers, pjs and dressing gown, you’d have probably been taken to a quiet back room while the staff called around to find out who your carer was.

Now, one of the girls at work believes that it’s no big deal, especially if she’s finished for the day and forgotten to get some booze on the way home and then she has to go back out.

I genuinely cannot believe how people think that this is the right way to interact in a society.

We are rapidly heading towards Morlocks and Eloi. Give it a few more generations and I think there will be a marked societal divide (if there isn't already).

I have seen people in Exeter Toby Carvery eating Sunday lunch in their pyjamas and slippers. I kid you not.

It's not just you. Born in the 1960s, I feel like I lived through the best time in history. Which came to an end with the rise of social media and trial by popular opinion.

I don't recall government and public services ever being as bad as they are now. I don't recall a can't be arsed attitude like the one that everyone seems now to have.

Yes, people appear thicker, but far more entitled.

England moves to fourth in international rankings for reading:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/england-moves-t...

And from my experience as the father of 2 children in KS1 and KS2, they teach formal grammar, phonics, etc to a much higher level than I learned in the 80s...
