Myself and my better half are looking around for the above as we are about to start renting a place together. After a quick tally I've realised I have over £10k of electronics, gadgetry and assorted media alone that needs protecting! :yikes: Does the average policy cover things like 300 CDs, 120 DVDs, 200 12" records, or is that considered a specialist collection requiring separate cover? The other half has much less in terms of this - hers is more clothes, nice bike and other bits and pieces. We've not valued her stuff yet.

Can anyone recommend a decent provider for this sort of cover?

TIA :D

If you email me some values I can do a quote for you tommorrow.

Yes, insure them as specified items! If they are worth more than £1500 per item for anything you will have to anyway.

Once my better half has her list we will be in touch - thing is, we haven't moved yet so can't give an exact postcode. In terms of value, there's certainly nothing approaching £1500. We'll probably come up with a final itemised figure of £30k between us.

I've just listed all my clothes and they total £5155!!! When did I buy all this stuff? It's not Armani - mostly jeans, nice T's and Nikes, with the odd North Face/Berghaus jacket - two clothes rails in total...

With furniture I reckon £40k might be the actual total. Cheers for your help - I'll look into L&G.

AFAIK the "average" policy covers £15-20k with a 1000-2000 limit per item....

L&G have different levels for different grades of homeowners.

FTB/Standard/Standard Plus

then you can add in specific items like that £2k engagement ring, the plasma screen etc.

Theres even an option to cover specific items worldwide... so your vid camera and Versace suitcases are safe on your jolly to Ibifa

So how much approximately might we pay for £40k's cover?

TWO GRAND for an engagement ring??!! Not on my bloody salary.

Also, Julian, those RV8 coffee tables are irreplaceable, you know

Me Julie just renewed the policy on the flat with DirectLine; I was with them last year but this year Tesco is cheaper.
Mind you, I don't know what would happen if I tried to claim for two milling machines, a lathe and three welding sets if I had a fire...

All depends on Postcode, claims history, window locks, neighbour hood watch schemes, you local bobby's inside leg measurement etc. etc.

Typical quote for my street (done two mortgages down here now) is about £35pm for Building & Contents insurance with a £150 excess.

But get some quotes.

Highest priced item is a £1200 Sony widescreen telly - probably now half that to buy! (other half has head in hands!)

£1200 for a fking telly!?!??

Most of the 'expensive' bits are £300-a-pop hi-fi components, with the odd bit of Arcam in there too.

Well, we're looking at moving to a nice-ish area, have never made a claim, will be fanatical about security, not sure about Neighbourhood Watch, and my inside leg is 34"

We'll be shopping around for the best deal - thanks for you advice

I shouldn't worry about this amount of CDs, DVDs and records, that's just a normal collection nowadays. Worry if you go over 10000 CDs and records. Then the insurance companies require that you itemize and value the whole collection - took me a month!!!

does make it easier to sell on ebay now though

club the stereo gear together and insure it as a seperate item mate. If someone broke in they would surely all go walkies together...?

Interesting, thanks - it certainly makes up a substantial part of our assets (is that a bad thing? )

I like the idea, but it wouldn't help me too much with my career plans. A couple of big Maglites are on permanent standby for that sort of eventuality - I'm more concerned with what goes on whilst we're out, and of course the risk of fire or other damage.

I wonder if it would be a no-no to use the Captor spray on an intruder? Will post on SP&L I think...

Is that the guy that shot the pikey burglar?

If only a few more people like him existed, the world would be a better place

Course, I'd be looking for a new job
