Huh - luxury !

Mine reads permanently empty, which can be a bit nerve-racking.

Funny thing mine reads permanently full
Got my estimation wrong last week and ran out of juice 3 miles from home
Didn't twig untill the recovery man tested the spark
Funny thing the ditributor cap was hanging off also so "I thought it was wet plugs" I said

Next time you fill up,when its full wait for a about 30 seconds and try again I'll bet you like mine you get another 10 or 15 pounds worth of gas in.(It takes a while for the fuel to get through from the full right hand tank to the left hand tank). If this is the case you will find your gauge is correct.
