I have been asked by a friend to have a look at his polo.
He has just bought it and drove it 50 miles home. Now the car wont start. It turns over fine, battery is a bit low at 12.3v but even with a jump pack it will not start.

Plugging it in 2 codes came up.

17766- cylinder 2 ignition circut open P1358
18049- check DTC memory of A/C ECU P1641

Both codes under engine management.

So far have changed coil pack on cylinder 2 for a new bosch one and that has removed code 17766 but it is still not starting.

I have scanned the A/C side and there no fault codes there.

Has anyone came across this before?

I am thinking either crank/cam sensor but live data records engine rpm at 240 ish when trying to start it.

If it's had an ignition fault then it is probably flooded and perhaps has fouled plugs.

I don't know whether that car has a flood clear mode but it's worth trying since you have nothing to lose: with the throttle fully open crank it for 30 seconds and see whether it shows any signs of life.

If you are willing to dig into the electrics, you can pull the fuel pump relay to enable a similar process without needing flood clear mode.

If you're willing to get your hands dirty, swap the plugs for a new set properly gapped and try again.

If all that fails you're looking at a warranty claim from the dealer (if bought through a dealer), or a home start service from your preferred recovery service, or asking your favorite local garage to fix it for you.

I have not changed the plugs yet but have removed them and had a look at them. They look newish. I am going to try get a coil pack tester light thing and see if there is a signal going to the coils.
