My 2002 E46 M3 had a bit of an off day yesterday and is now feeling sorry for itself.

I ran into a particularly nasty pothole (at about 15mph) which resulted in the cog of doom coming on - It has done this before and usually drives fine and the light goes out after a restart. I've always figured a nasty bump knocks some sensor triggering an error, but is actually fine but hard to diagnose.

I drove on for about 0.5 KM, stopped and power cycled the car.
Only this time, the light stayed on and I couldn't select any gears - bugger. I disconnected the battery, waited 30 seconds, and reconnected it - at which point, the car would start and drive fine but with a completely knackered dashboard (CodE or PPPPP displayed but dash basically borked).

I nursed it 10 miles or so and it drove fine (with the borked dash) only to then lose all power about 0.5KM from home. Lost power steering, gears, everything.

At which point, it then woudln't restart at all. Tried the battery disconnect route again, but it remains the same.

It now cranks but won't catch. Initial thoughts were that it was battery related, now I'm thinking fuel / fuel pump / relay perhaps?

Any folks out there that have any better ideas?

It's sat on the drive unable to move and I'm struggling to come up with suitable ideas of ways to fix it.
(A code reader is on it's way to me to read the codes which will be a start)

Fuel pump fuse #54 has got me running again

Now just have to figure out if the car is basically ok or if there is a bigger problem.

Plus the dash is still borked of course

My M3 cut out suddenly last year with no warning, would crank but not fire up. Checked the fuel pump fuse and found it blown, replaced it, car fired up but then heard the fuse snap and it cut out again.
Fitted a new genuine pump and it fired up straight away. Car had done 135k miles at the time.
Can’t help on the SMG bit, mines a manual.
Take a look at M3cutters, lots of advice on there.
