As I have a new set of discs and Pagid blues I will wait until they wear out before I consider a Mk2 setup or floaters.

In the meantime a previous owner has fitted what is best described as a bit of Heath-Robinson kit consisting of a short length of 65mm dia. steel tube pointing at the top of the disc and a length of flexible hose open end facing forward, cable-tied to the undertray.

As the hoses scrape the floor, are damaged and need replacing I have been trawling the net for something a little more tried and tested.

I can only find Carnewal.com's two options....

Firstly Porsche Motorsport Cup brake ducts - (2 to 4 times larger than standard ducts) and secondly an aftermarket brake cooling kit consisting of ducts and scoops.

Has anyone on here tried these products or know of something better??? Or do I just strip out the Heath-Robinson set up and leave the standard bits in place???

Rather spookey this one! When a chap called Gaby Bliss had your car Burnsie, I fitted these with him out of some old bits and bobs I had at work. You'd never guess I was in engineering by their appaling quality!

To be honest they did'nt make any difference, he just could'nt be arsed to take them off.

Are you having problems with the Mk1 brakes? I changed to a set of pagid orange, got the discs skimmed (to remove all traces of other pad material) and put in Castrol SRF and have not had a single problem with fade, and I drive a circuit which is VERY hard on brakes.

Ensuring you only use a single pad type on a disc is more important than you can imagine - a mix of materials will definitely lead to a vibration.

As for the cup ducts, be careful that they are pointing the air the correct direction - I did read that they are designed for larger discs and therefore the angle is wrong for stock discs.

Not really.... The pads and discs were brand new so no mix of materials here.... and I am using ATE sooper blue. At Donnington last week someone mentioned the makeshift (sorry JC) ducts were visible hanging down so I thought it was time I sorted them out.

I will try and find out if the cup ducts are suitable or not. Thanks for the warning.

try pointing them at the centre of the discs instead. They do nothing poining at the face or outer edge....

Duh??? Perhaps I'm thick.... I don't quite get your drift....

The duct is pointing directly at the rear face of the disc.

However, if it were pointing at the leading edge it would be blowing directly into the vanes between the discs and would possibly give even better cooling wouldn't it??? Except that of course there is a bloody great big wheel rim in the way.

The air should be directed into the inner hub of the brake, not directly onto either face of the disc....from here it is distributed outwards via the inner cooling vanes of the disc and cools both sides of the disc.

If you cool one side of the disc (as you are now) you risk uneven cooling of the disc.

The original fitment 'brake duct' directs air at one side of the disc.

The cooling kits I have seen have a cowl which initially directs air, via a duct, directly to the face of the disc then via the cowl towards the centre vanes, so none really direct the flow to the ideal spot.

The second picture looks like it might do ?

Assuming the bit that isn't attached to the piping fits at the front of the car somewhere and acts as the air scoop, the other part looks like it may fit into the hub ???

Could be wrong here, I'm no gt3 expert for sure!...surely someone has fitted these or there are fitted pics somewhere ??

Other way round.... The non-attached bit fits over the disc, the bit attached to the duct collects the air.

I have the second pic Cooling kit fitted to my MK1 the unattached parts collect the air under the car and is ducted to the hair dryer type outlets attached, which direct the cooling air onto the inner face of the disc.

There really is only one solution regarding cracking of the standard cross drilled disc's don't fit them,

Brembo or Alcon Floating disc's with pagid yellow RS19 pads are the way to go.

I stand corrected...

Seems like the way forward is to throw away what I've got in the way of cooling and wait till the current set-up wears out, then fit floaters....

Sorry, completely off-topic!

Tim, looking at your profile (luverly car, btw...one day, one day!)...where did you get your German-style number plate from?...I've seen a few about, in mags, etc....looks good, but no idea where to source one. Anyone know?

Cheers

AFAIK Porsche have threatened to prosecute EU tags for copyright infringement so he has stopped doing Porsche ones - you may be unlucky.

ok, thanks guys, will surf later on and see.

S

Edited to say.....(rather than stick another Off Topic reply on here) looking at the EU Tags site, it *appears* the only thing they now don't sell is the Porsche Number Plate Frame, the black backing plate which often has the manufacturer & dealer details...guess this is the bit Porsche were getting arsey about?...can't see their prob with any of the other products these guys sell (ie the plates, Stadt badges or tax plaques)...

Ta!

On my F40 I used the LM brake ducts from Michelotto.

On tallking with Michelotto they pointed out the most effective part of the kit was the duct that was directing air onto the brake caliper.

Another duct flowed air onto the face of the disk.

The rear brakes had ducts for caliper cooling only.
