A friend saw my car for the first time yesterday and he asked why I chose a silver car when so many cars on the road are silver? I told him that when I first started looking for a 996tt, I went to a dealer to see a black one and noticed that they had a silver one as well. I asked them to park them next to each other so that I could compare the two. I felt that the silver one looked best as it showed more detail such as:
- front grills
- side air intakes
- engine cover slats
- rear bumper side slats
All of these are black and therefore were lost on the black car. Also, the silver car’s lines where easier to make out and therefore its curves were more evident.

For these reasons, I decided that the 996tt looks better in light colours and so I avoided the dark colours when looking for one. Given the choice of light colours available, I felt that silver was the best. Has anyone else had similar thoughts?

Black is a much nicer colour for a 996tt I'm afraid.

Parked next to each other, black takes it every time!

Best you book a respray

Fantastic in any colour but black is the daddy!!

I think the black grills/intakes look odd on a silver car, almost cheap as they are plastic. They blend in on black cars.
I've thought about this long and hard as there a far more silver cars to choose from, but black looks the best. Second would be Lapis blue.

Still the best car in the world in any colour.

Black every time. I think Silver is about the worst colour for a 911. 90% of TT's on the road seem to be silver. Horses for courses though

Far too many blacks and silver cars in this world, choose the deep and rich Lapis Blue!

As the buyer for the Sytner Group said on receiving a call from my neighbour 'It's not another black or silver is it? We've got far too many of those'

All this talk of dark colours and silver being poo... I have to chirp up....

I was a believer in the black turbo thing, but... it is a real pain for stonechips... like any 996 the front picks up the chips very easily... and black does amplify that.

I had a Lapis Blue 996 Cabriolet once... now that colour is lush... but again... chips all to easily...

Now Silver... Hides most things quite well, even dirt... Not my first choice... but I agree with the points earlier... ON a dark colour turbo the side intakes are not so prominent looking.

Soon as I get some phots of mine done I will post it up. It has a great spec... with some silver bits inside and dials in silver it looks great. When I saw it for sale I just had to get it...

In theory, Black with Boxster Red (yes I know... I am the only person that likes it) would have been my first choice, but when you put them next to each other the silver car is more revealing.

I spoke to a guy at the PCGB festival who was telling me he had a two thousand mile 993TT S in silver and how he would turn down £100,000 for it.
I advised him that if anybody should offer such a silly amount that he should bite their hands off as in five or ten years time the fashion will have changed and everyone will be wanting arena red!
With that he walked off.

A two-thousand mile car that's minimum seven years old? So 300 miles a year and likely less. I guess he's spent 99% of his time looking at it. Would have been cheaper just to move next door to an existing owner...Did you ask him if the crank still turns...;-)

Surely it was cheaper for him to buy a Matchbox car or better still one of those in the glass cabinets in our local OPCs. These cars are to be driven!!!!

No doubt, a black 996tt has a more aggressive look and originally it was my first choice of colour. It was only until I saw a black and a silver one parked next to each other that I realised how much more detail and curves the silver one showed. Try it sometime and you'll see what I mean...

...agree Barry J, silver is the daddy for 911s, not that I'm biased or anything...shows off the flowing lines of my 993 I think..

If Arctic Silver is the one with the blue tinge then I would agree....

Apart from that I think most Porsche colours lack imagination. There's nothing in the range. Mines a supposedly popular colour (Seal Grey) which is pretty drab.

Dark colours show every mark. As soon as you've cleaned it it's dirty again...dust and water marks etc.Othrewise Black would be my choice.

Its got to be Signal orange like the 997 at Brands...failing that RED....its the new silver

Be Brave.

OK, I'm biased too with my ocean blue metallic 993TT. I love the darker colours for the "meaner" look, though 'tis true that the dirt shows up pretty quickly. That is just an excuse to run my hands over her luscious rump with a sponge though, so not all is lost!

I'm not extrovert enough for the lairy yellows and oranges, and somehow silver is just a bit mundane - there are so many damned silver cars on the road!

Each to their own I suppose.

Rarely does a thread go by without most Porsche owners showing their complete lack of passion.

I would say I'm one of the few Porsche owners who choose their car with their heart and not their head. I thought that is what owning a sports car is all about? If when choosing the colour/spec of your Porsche your first thoughts are towards re-sale, stone chips, keeping it clean etc. And not towards owning the car you had always dreamed of with no compromises, then you are truly missing the point and the passion of owning a sports car. Infact, you should walk out of the Porsche showroom and head towards your nearest BMW dealership, as this is where you truly belong.

My 996 is metalic viola with GT3 kit, it's what I always dreamed owning a Porsche would be like, it's a 911 exactly the way I want it, with no compromises.
When it gets dirty I clean it, when the stone chips are showing I get a respray.

Maybe because it's the best colour for the car?

Not necessarily - I reckon a lot of people go for silver because it's "safe" and neutral, so good for ease of resale and so on. That doesn't make it the best colour!

Good on yer Thunderfoot....

It's just that after the 'wash the car every other day' and having the front resprayed/armourfended or whatever... I thought, I know, how about a colour that might just not show the dirt/marks as much....

It works...

Sure, Guards Red is great... Viola Metallic... wasn't that a special on the 993... or was that Vesuvius???

Maybe it was the colour on the millenium 996... confused now...

Great colours anyway.

Naa, there's so many silver ones that you have no choice but to buy silver
